What would cause tiny speckles of sand sized rust spots in an older 13' whaler Interior? (Blue Gel Coated)
There is not that much of it but it is something I noticed. Near the bilge area.....Is there something in the gelcoat itself that would cause this? or is it the sand from around long island NY that rusts?
That is caused by tiny little bits if carbon steel left in the deck from sawing, drilling or grinding something. The use of steel wool will cause this as well which is why you should always use bronze wool onboard instead of steel wool. When water hits the bits of steel they "bloom" into little rust spots.
Use acid to clean them up. Barkeeper's Friend is a common cleanser that has oxalic acid in and will remove rust stains.
Otherwise know as industrial fall out. Dilute muratic acid 10-1 (10 parts water and 1 part acid), wear gloves and use an old rag. Wash with water immediately after.
