Hello, I'm new to the forum but justed wanted to say Hi, and of course brag on my boat! Back in the early-mid 90's I had a '84 montauck 17 with a 90 Johnson in my toy collection. But when I moved to Colorado from New Orleans, sadly I had to leave her behind.
Fast forward to 2 weeks ago and I have another Montauck 17! I now live in West Palm Beach, and a water toy is key to not getting bored to death. I found a 1992 17' with a 100GT Johnson on Craigslist and went out to have a look. The boat has been kept in a dry stack shed since the boat was delivered new to the original owner. I am the 2nd owner, and got the original bill of sale and the virgin Whaler owners manual.
The boat is in very nice shape. The bottom is as new, as is all of the interior gelcoat. I'm not a superfan of the "plastic" Montauk 17, but it sure is low maintenance! It came with a Pate 27 gal. tank which I ditched for a Moeller 15 gallon. I basiclly redid the fuel system, threw in a new battery and BAM.....It didn't start. However after some fiddling I got her to fire on the "Choke/Primer". So off came the carbs. 2 cans of carb cleaner and some wire gauges later, she fired right up! I made sure that the heads were flowing water and replaced some clamps. I had a little problem with the shift lever on the power head, but all is well now. The Trim/Tilt will need some seals and a new motor at some point, but it works now. Also changed the lower unit lube.
Took the boat out for a quick spin yesterday and she ran awesome! Did I mention...230hrs on the motor from new, and it runs like it! I forgot how much I like these boats. I have spent the last few years driving yacht tenders (read all sizes of inflatables including a 28' protector) and its really fun to drive a boat that actually handles at low speed!
I'm not any kind of expert but it seems like a good deal to me. You seem to love the boat so the price is not a factor.
Either on this site somewhere or maybe another boating site, someone used a "Lucas" product to seal the seals(that sounds funny) on the trim unit and couldn't brag on it enough. Might be an option.
Mike
Thanks Mike I'll check it out! I grew up in BR, So greetings to you! The price was even sweeter due to the fact I have a 50/50 partner that works on yachts and is never here! Perfect!
