Does anyone know the weight of a 1985 13' Whaler. I have a little Scion XB and am wondering if it is safe to tow. Thanks Barb

Barb,
The total towing weigh will be not just the weight of the boat but the weight of the motor, gear, fuel and trailer as well.
A 1985 Sport 13 should weigh about 350 pounds. A 40 HP outboard motor of that era might weigh 200-250 pounds. The trailer might weight 300-400 pounds. Group 24 battery: 45 pounds. Gear? Another 100 pounds? Couple a six gallon fuel tanks, full: 100 pounds.
What does that add to? Maybe 1200 pounds? Maybe you have a four stroke outboard? More gear? Less gear? At any rate I don't think the boat could possibly weight more than 1500 pounds.
What is the towing capacity of a Scion XB?

You should be able to tow a '13 behind a Scion.....

What year is your Scion. It makes a difference. A 2004 has a 1.5 engine. Same engine that is used in the Toyota Echo. A 2009 Scion has a 2.4 engine, same engine as used in the Rav4. From what I can gather the Scion has a tow rating of 1000#. That's right on the max for an 13 ft. Whaler. I feel Tom is right on the weight numbers, although if you are running a 25-30hp 2 stroke motor weight would be more like 110 lbs. Carry your gear and your gas tanks in your Scion to reduce towing weight. I tow my 13 footer with a Pont. Vibe. It has a 1500# tow capacity, 1.8 engine and about 300lbs more weight than a Scion. I don`t even feel the boat behind me when I tow. Maybe you should do some more research before you make a decision. Load up your boat as you normally would, and take it to a certified scale. then you will know exactly where you stand. You will probably be at the max for towing with a Scion, unless you have a 2009 model.

I don't even know what a Scion is but it has to be more vehicle than my VW I used to pull my 13 footer with.
I towed many, many miles at 65 to 70 mph with my 1967 VW Squareback....

I also towed it with my other 1963 VW Squareback. I used to work on and restore Squarebacks.

Nope, sure don't I own a Ford which is much better than that junk Chevy you drive. D'oh!
John, I seem to remember when we were kids, your family used to pull a 1969 Sea Breeze 20 foot boat bow rider with a 115hp Evinrude on the back with a 1982 Toyota Tercell. If that Tercell can pull the 20 ft boat, the Scion can easily pull a '13 foot Whaler.....
Just did a little research on the Scion....that's how I know. Binkie is right in there with the numbers...

I'd rather pull mine with a scion than a ford. By the way that's my avatar, I built that boat.

Don`t know how anyone towed a 20 foot boat and 115 outboard with a Tercell. I tried towing(not far) my 2800lb Bass boat with my Vibe, and it was not fun. I did some braking tests from 40mph. With the 13 ft. Whaler in tow braking was 4` longer than without a tow. With Bass boat in tow, braking was 40` longer than no tow. My driveway is a gentle uphill slope. No where as steep as a normal ramp. I parked the Vibe and Bass boat on the drive, and wet the drive down. When I moved forward I spun the front wheels. I have a stick shift. Also when I backed the Bass boat into the yard up slight hill, I could smell the clutch. The Bassboat, about the weight of a 17 Ft. Whaler with a V6 outboard, was way too much weight for my Vibe.

I love Joe`s VW station wagon. I`d like to find one like that in order to build a plug in EV, my next project.

I tow my Outrage 20 all over the place with a Escape hybrid that has a towing capacity of 1000#
My guess is that you will be fine.

Dude it happened. Course you had to have two people sitting on the hood but it pulled it out of the water.

OH YA!! I remember doing that! That is so funny...that little tercell worked it's butt off to pull that boat out of the water. The front end would be sitting up pretty high and the front wheels would not have enough weight on them to maintain traction unless we piled up on the hood. Back in those days most folks used cars to pull stuff around.....not SUV's or tucks that are used nowadays.
