My oldest son has been looking at a few 17's in the area for sale. He was heading down the road about 100 miles to look at one when he called about another one for sale in the newspaper. The ad said 13' whaler with an 85 hp Suzuki. I thought for sure it was an error but didn't know if it was in fact a 13 with a smaller engine or a larger boat with the 85. Talking to the owner on the phone wasn't much help so we headed out to look at it. To our surprise it was indeed a 13' from about 1973 and really had a Suzuki 2 cycle 85 hp on the back! The owner (about 70) said he liked it so that he could outrun the rain when he needed to. His son said he never ran it over 1/2 throttle. The boat was in pretty good shape but we didn't stay long. The rain gave us an easy exit.
I had heard of a mechanic at a Whaler dealership putting a Merc 85 on one but had never seen one. I know I don't want to ride in one.

Thats alot of HP for that little boat. It has been done though. Think about all those guys with 15 foot Baja's with 150's and 200's on them. I know there are meant to go fast - but they way overpower them. To each his own I guess.

I like to go fast - don't get me wrong but anything over 50mph is wasted on me and right now none of my boats even go that fast... I need to fix that. lol
