There is a small lake near me that allows electric motors only. I know nothing about electric engines. Can anyone recommend a brand? What do I look for in a motor? I will probably push a 10' boat. How much of a std marine battery will the motor use?

I live on a small lake - My son has a 10 foot alum jon boat - he has a 30 pound Minn Kota Endura and it pushes it ok. I am currently redoing a 12 foot gamefisher (among other projects) - Its a fiberglass hull. I plan on putting an 80 Pound Minn Kota transom motor and a 45 pound bow mount trolling motor for working the fishing spots.
It really depends on what you want to do. They make electric boat motors that will plan a boat these days.

Basically I just want to move a 10' jon boat faster than I can swim. How long will the battery hold out? The boat I looked at had a 24 lb thrust motor.

My son runs his on a std 12 volt trolling motor battery for about 3 to 4 hours. It really depends on how much throttle you give it. Just like a gas engine, full throttle will empty the tank quicker.
The endura motors dont last as long. The maxxum motors have some circuit that will make the battery last longer. The Minn Kota website is very helpful.

I'm trying to figure out if I want to spend the money on a setup that won't live up to a modest expectation.

Hi Harley,
I have used a 50 LBS Minn Kota when I also had a 15 ft aluminum modified Jon boat. worked fine... I also use it on my 17 whaler today, it pushes it.... but I would not expect a lot run time out of fully charged battery. In windy conditions its lame... But to troll around docks or in very stumpy area of Greenwood lake it works. I believe it is the eudra model.
If your carefull with the throttle you should get a few hours on a small boat.
good luck

Well I paid $50 for my sons boat, $100 for his motor, $50 for the battery and $75 for an on board charger. He wouldn't trade it for anything - He is on it every day of the week fishing in the lake. Its pretty cool tooling around in such a quiet boat.
That being said I will be putting a bigger two battery motor on mine.
I wish I could help you more.

Thanks guys, you have been very helpful. I spotted a 11' jonboat with a 24 lb minnkota 10 miles away for $250. I'll check it out.

Let us know how you make out - the beauty with those little boats is you can use it for 2 weeks and sell it for what you paid or use it for 5 years and still sell for what you paid as long as you keep it in decent shape.
Good luck!
