Yamaha Speedometer

Member Posts: 5 Comments: 0 Joined: 02/17/06	I recently purchased an 18' Outrage with a 150 HP Yamaha. The seller said the speedometer hasn't worked for years. Member Personal Page Posts: 4280 Comments: 7 Joined: 09/30/05	Pete, If that Yamaha 150 has a pitot tube built into the gearcase, I now why your speedometer doesn't work; the pitot tube is plugged. Try running an appropriately sized twist drill bit in there and clear out the wood, sand or mud that is likely clogging it. In my experience, those gearcase pitots are just about worthless because they clog so easily. Buy a GPS if you want an accurate speedometer. Edited by Tom W Clark on 04/19/06 - 2:42 PM

Member Posts: 5 Comments: 0 Joined: 02/17/06	Thanks for the info Tom. It does have a pilot tube built into the gearcase. I'll look into it over the weekend. The majority of my boating is on Lake Erie and known waters on Buzzards Bay, MA so think I'll hold off on the GPS for now.
