Gents! could someone please advise, as to why so many owners of older whalers want to build up the 15 inch transom to a 20 inch , when short shaft engines are available. I have a 1961 beater (have taken pictures and will post one day with the story ) that I am rebuilding and could easlily do this but would like to know the reason for it.
Any thoughts on should I build it up or leave it alone Thanks Bob
While your correct that short shafts are still available, they are becoming harder to find in the over 25 HP range. I think the idea is that at some point they will no longer be available. Your current choices are limited to Merc and Tohatsu for a 40 HP Short Shaft. The build up or not build up question is yours alone, my plan is to use a jackplate on the 13 to raise the transom 5 inches when / if I ever need to do that.
We get a lot of wash over the transom of our '64 when we cut the throttle fast. Yes, there are 15" engines out there, but it's easier to find a 20" in a variety of HP ranges. For that reason I've considered building up the trans on ours if we were to repower.
I wouldn`t go to the trouble of building up the transom. If you use a 20" motor, just install an adjustable4 setback bracket. A little wash over the transom cutout isn`t a problem to me.
