I am restoring a 1965 13 ft whaler
It came with a 1986 40 hp envinrude but the boat sits very low in the water at the transom. I was thinking of replacing it with a 25 hp 4 stroke. Does any one have speeds info with a 25hp engine

It's not the HP that will get you but the weight and the short shaft. That Evinrude comes in about 180#. While some of the four stroke 25HP are less weight than that, they aren't that much less. Have you weighted the hull to check for water? Do you have photo's of how she was sitting in the water?

I thought the engine weighed alot more than 180# . The boat had seats made of treated lumber in the back of the boat that I took out. Maybe thats why it was sitting so low in the water. The boat is dry. The person that I bought from always had it out of the water. I can lift one side of the transom by myself. I also saw some threads saying that you do not get much more speed from 40 hp compared to a 25hp

I'm running a 25hp Honda currently. At 5000 feet in altitude, with an 11 pitch prop at 6000 rpm (max) I'm running right at 23 with just me in the boat.
Hope this helps.

philm,
drop those PT seats and see where she floats. The 13 is pretty low to the water and I am sure those don't help. Personally, I would use the engine that's on there, provided the compression is good until it died. Look thru the personal pages to see how other 13's sit in the water compared to yours.

I have a 2002 Nissan 25 hp 4-stroke on my 13. The engine weighs 156 lbs. Works pretty well for me but I would love not to have to run it almost WOT to get a decent cruising speed.
You can see how mine sits in the water at my personal page.

The boat was designed for the 25-35hp motors of the `50`s era, of about 110 lbs. It has been routinely overloaded in modern times. The only modern engine that will fit the original criteria is the 2 stroke OMC 25-30hp. they weigh about 110lbs and work well on a 13 footer, and provide plenty of power. I`m running a `99 25 Johnson.
