Montauk Cooler Cleat mounting

Member Personal Page Posts: 122 Comments: 0 Joined: 08/27/07	I made some cooler cleats, and was about to mount them on my Montauk, when I saw this picture: picture Is the cooler cleat mounted correctly in the picture? The cleats mount on the flat spot of the floor and that is why they are angled in as the floor starts to rise up any further out. The cooler for the Montauk sits on top of the cleats unlike the Outrage models where the cooler sits on the floor and the cleats are on the outside.

Member Personal Page Posts: 122 Comments: 0 Joined: 08/27/07	Joe- I understood that the cleats were angled, and the cooler sat on top of them, but as pictured, the cut-out is toward the center of the boat, and the bungee cord comes out toward the center of the boat. It seems to me that with the cut-outs facing toward the center of the boat, the bungee cord is going to have to pass between the top of the cleat and the bottom of the cooler. Is that correct?

Either something is wrong with the photo or the person who made those cleats put them together upside down. Look at the drawing in the downloads section. I shows the proper angle of the cleat and the toe pieces. The bungee cord is on the outside, NOT the inside as the photo you show.

Member Personal Page Posts: 123 Comments: 0 Joined: 05/18/07	After studying the drawing of the cooler cleat download it looks like it is made correctly, just mounted wrong. it looks like the 2 need to be swapped around. I have a 1970 17' hull and wonder if there is a different cooler cleat for the older style hull, I think the floor is different and it would be a complex angle to fabricate a cooler cleat that would allow a 96 qt. cooler to sit flat over the length of the cleat. I would love a remedy to this, I fabricated my own cleats and the cooler sits on the blocks at each end of the cleat which does not provide enough surface area, therefore the cooler dents in when 2 people sit there while riding around.

The toe pieces are NOT on the correct side. They are upside down. There is a drawing for the cooler cleats for the 94 qt. which is a little longer. Are you using an Igloo 'Marine' 94 qt cooler?

Member Personal Page Posts: 123 Comments: 0 Joined: 05/18/07	Joe, I see what your saying, they are upside down. My cooler is a 94 qt Igloo, it is not marine grade. I see now that after reading in the West Marine catalogue the marine grade ice chests are built better and cost more, I can see where it would make a difference. About the cleat diagram, the drawing for the 94qt cleat is still just a flat piece of material that follows the conture of the floor. On an older hull the ice chest would be sitting accross a pair of cleats that are not horizontal accross the top side or parallel to the bottom of the ice chest, would the marine grade ice chest hold up well to sitting on the angled cleat ? How would you install these cleats ? Would use 3M 5200 and screw it down, I'm pretty sure there is no wood in the floor in the area that the cleats go. Thanks

Member Personal Page Posts: 4280 Comments: 7 Joined: 09/30/05	Fellas, The cleat in the photo is not mounted correctly, that is true. HOWEVER, The cleat IS on the correct side and is NOT upside down. All one would need to do is ROTATE it 180 degrees so the "toe" piece faces forward and the "notch" and bungee are on the outside. Edited by Tom W Clark on 05/16/08 - 9:06 PM
