In my quest for the illusive 18 Outrage. I ran across a boat I thought would be a good buy. Did not turn out so good , but I noticed the gunwales were Oak . Is this the cheap way out(replacement) or did they come this way as an option ? Thanks BG

Barry,
What sides?
The gunwales?

They were originally teak. An option was fiberglass in those days.
Later they were fiberglass with the option of teak.
There was never an option for Oak. Some teak looks like oak at first glance.
Try sanding the gunwale boards to see what the wood really is.

The sides of all Boston Whalers ever made are made of fiberglass ;-)
Perhaps you meant the gunwale boards on this particular Outrage 18 are made of oak?
If so, they were a replacement. The gunwale boards on the Outrage 18, if wood, were always made of teak.
There was one model of Whaler made that had oak gunwale boards from the factory. Can anybody name that model?

Joe , the Gunwales were just refinished. I had a cabinet maker with me so they were oak. I just do not understand that kind of replacement..???

Bare oak exposed to water will turn black. Make sure you keep them well finished.
