I would like to put a trolling motor on my 15' sport so I can work the shores for reds, specks and flounder in coastal NC. Should I mount it on the bow or transom. If on the bow, is there wood backing to screw into? Transom seems easier to mount and is closer to the battery and the controls can be accessed easier but bow seems to give more control. Anyone have experience with this?

I put a 24V Great White trolling motor on my 20' flats boat (not a Whaler) a few years ago. I mounted it on the bow because it is much easier to pull the boat rather than push it, especially in the wind. Of course you have this trolling motor mount up on your bow even when you are not using the motor. If I had it all to do over again, I would just pole the boat on the flats. On the Texas coast we have a lot of shallow water and poling is easy. If you are fishing deeper guts, etc you might need the trolling motor.

I used two deep cycle marine batteries that add considerable weight...not to mention the hassle of charging. I think it would be much easier to use the transom mounted one on a 15' Whaler so you do not have to run the battery cables too far. Hope this helps.
