so yesterday i decide that it is as good a time as any to change the gear oil in the old merc, problem is that both of the plugs are stuck i have tried with my largest screwdriver wd40 and even the torch but they still wont budge any technice for removind the drain screws that i donk know about?
I use a manual impact driver from Sears. The bit for the flat blade is large and wide and fits into the lower unit plugs very well. You turn the handle as if you were going to unscrew and hold it at the stop, then a quick whack with the hammer twists the tool and has always popped even the worst plugs free for me. Plus it's pretty short money ($25), considering you can also use it on bolts with 1/2" drive sockets, 3/8" with the proper adapter. Check it out:
