I am debating purchasing a '69 13' BW. It has a 25hp johnson on it (pull start), mahoghany etc. Overall the boat is in good shape for it's age. Thinking of it as a project boat for my son and me. Do you guys think $2,000 is too much for this boat? I have been shopping around and a restored model with a lot newer engine is approximately $4k. Thoughts?

Brendan, I just paid $2,000 for a 1969 13 foot Sport and galvanized trailer, both in average to good condition. And this was without a motor. I was looking for some time prior to this purchase, ( looked at a few in the mid-atlantic/southeast region). The best I could have done was a 1972 13 foot sport in fair condition, (with serious spider cracking, cracked transom, and keel gouges) with motor and trailer for close to $3,000. I think I was a saavy buyer and I did my homework. This being said, I have seen a few 1960-1970's hulls in poor condition left out in open weather for years with completely rotten or missing woodwork and no trailer or motor asking in the $1,000 - 2,000 range. I think this info may give you some idea of the current market. Good resources for sales data for smaller whalers are CRAIGSLIST, BOATTRADERONLINE, EBAY, AND USEDBOATS.COM. Good luck!

If everything's in good shape, it certainly sounds reasonable. Would you be able to take it for a "sea trial" to check the engine performance before buying?

Is the engine a '69 ? replacing it will be expensive (get prices), I went with a friend to purchase a 69 13' sport/25 hp (pull start) in "O.K. to fair cond.", seller wanted $1,200 for all, my friend said I'm gonna offer $1000, I said "give 'em the 12 and let's go", ( this was in 1996), after purchase, engine was replaced with a 40 hp Merc "tall boy", replaced steering, did interior. The price of a boat, even a "Whaler" is determined by the year of the engine, I would be asking if the water pump was changed out every 2 years and ask to see reciepts. It is a good project boat as part's and repair's are fairly easy, it is easy to move around on the trailer too, I love the 13 footer, it's like a big bath tub toy that you can take out on the water, that 13 sport is "Ton's" of FUN. I saw the guy that bought the boat not long ago, he does NOT use it much at all, he said he would let it go for the right price, I asked "What would the right price be" he said "$10,000 the engine is like brand new", Shock I asked if he did the water pump every year he said "Um no, only once", I pointed out that their is no "Hour meter" on the boat, is the "Buyer" supposed to take your "GOOD WORD" on a 12 year old outboard ? Just so ya know what ya dealing with out there.
