Whalers in the bahamas

I mentioned to one of the locals I got friendily with that I have a Whaler. To my surprise he was overily impressed even if it was only an older 17ft. He went on to tell me that those boats are "unsinkable" and fetch huge amounts of money in the bahamas when sold. Now, I realize the bahamas isnt that far from the US but I was taken back that they are so sought after there as well. He was saying that the fisherman love to use them for spear fishing and diving for conch. Talk about brand recognition!! Ed 1991 Montauk 17 - 2012 ETEC 90HP

Member Personal Page Posts: 38 Comments: 0 Joined: 05/07/07	Ed, That's funny, 5/1 thru 5/4 I was in Green Turtle Cay. Flew over with friends . I also noticed lots of Whalers. We rented a 17 Montauk with a 70 Johnson for a day and went cruising. We were in the Sea of Abaco. It was too rough in the outside seas (8-10) and where we were inside, it was 3-5 when you got away from the protection of the barrier islands. We ran 12 miles to Powell Cay and the Motauk did fine in 3-5 seas. I have an 85 Montauk with a 90 Johnson and a 98 Conquest at home. It was nice to see that my Montauk can take on some bumpy seas. Member Personal Page Posts: 38 Comments: 0 Joined: 05/07/07	It was cheap. $75.00 + gas. Came out to around $120.00. However, we did get a late start because it was raining and windy in the morning. We left the dock around noon and came back at 6pm. I learned my lesson about natural vs artificial baits. I had always know bait was better. Since I was flying over and I knew that the offshore forecast was 8-10, I had taken a few spinning rods and a whole bunch of lures. I was fishing off the beaches in Green Turle and in the flats from the boat. Those fish would follow the lure, see that it wasn't bait, laugh and swim away. Next time, I'm buying lots of bait. There must be hundreds of them on North Andros, mostly 15's to 18's. Some of them are pristine, some being used are in sad condition. The islanders think nothing of taking them out in conditions we wouldn't.
