Just purchased a 1978 Newport. It came with a 12 gal. plastic fuel tank which fits under the RPS. My question is should leave the vent screw on the lid open when I am not using the boat? I've only ever had a fishing boat with a 9.9 Johnson and the standard metal tank. I never worried about venting the tank. With the Newport, it quickly became obvious that I needed to open the vent when running the motor but what is the best thing to do when I am not using the boat. Should I close the vent or leave it open?
I think those metal tanks had a vent built in to the lid or they had a set screw vent. I left my vents open on my Montauk's 6 gallon tanks. If the tanks are in the shade and do not experience rising temperatures, you could close them. The concern is, if the temperature rises, the tank will bulge out. I learned my lesson once and left them open from then on.
