My local dealer (Harrisburg, PA) quoted me a price of 5500 for a new 90 HP Merc two-stroke, and an additional 600 for controls. (A further 300 to install, if I wish, but I'd rather do that myself.)

Just wondering if any of you know any secrets to getting the best price on new outboards. I'm wondering if prices are better in coastal towns, too.

Not a bad deal, that is the same price Ed's has them for.
If you want, I will sell you my old Merc controls and wiring harness for 1/2 of what new ones are, you pay shipping. It was on the boat 1 year before the engine blew. I have the remote control, wiring harness and tach harness. I have a water pressure gauge and trim gauge but no Tach as I sold that last year. The gauges are Teleflex Shara gauges with the tan face, extra $10 gets you both the water pressure and trim.
I might even still have the instructions if I look hard.
PM me if your interested in the Merc stuff

Don't know if you are interested in anything besides a Mercury, but Evinrude is offering a pretty good deal on the ETECs now with terms and warranty options.

kamie, I may be PMing you....

iotfm, the etec is highly recommended... do they make a 90 or 100? I would look into them before purchasing a merc.... I did happen to run across a price for the 300 hp etec..... scary! 22k+

I doubt you'll get a new 90 Etec anywhere close to 5500, cheapest I found one was about 7800.00 without controls and rigging. I believe the Merc 90's now come with a 3 year factory warranty as well. Unless you do a ton of boating, you'll be hard pressed to justify going to the DFI motors for the fuel savings. There are other perks to them though like better cold start manners, noise reduction and smoothness. IMO there isn't a much better all around motor for a smaller Whaler then the 90 Merc 2 stroke. Good luck

Dan,

How were you thinking of bolting the engine on? In my research for an engine for my Nauset, it became clear that not all engines will bolt on without major transom modification. The lower bolt holes on most engine mounts typically end up below the bottom of the splash well. This is a major pain. This problem kept me away from the Merc. I don't know about the E Techs, but I can say 100% that a Yamaha will bolt up without a problem. Yamaha has an extra set of holes that are located higher up the mount. You might want to look into the issue.

...and sorry, you were a day late on my old Johnson.

thanks to all! I appreciate the advice. And thanks, iop, for the PM on the Etec.

DavidK I was unaware of that issue.... I'll check that. The motor that came with the boat is a Yammie115. It runs, but the power trim unit is missing. I've been keeping an eye out for a used motor, and may still find what I need.

Dan, There's a big discussion on this issue in the thread....New outboards won't fit my 1966 Nauset . You might want to take a look.

Dan,
mount your outboard exactly like Tom suggest in the thread David refers too. You will be fine. PM me if you want the controls, I will send you the list of part numbers when I find it.
