Has anyone ever seen the commercial Whalers (Marine Police, Bay constable, Towing services, etc.) that have a single transom mounted heavy duty tubular rail, that wraps around the outboard engines like a cage, to protect them from slamming into other boats or structures ? ? ? (usually on 22' footers)
I like to fish the many bridges here on the west end Bays of southern Long Island, I saw a few of these go past me while I was tied up fishing to a bridge (getting battered by wakes) and was wondering about one of these for my 15' Sport, and it's NEW 50 H.P. Evinrude on the back. Anyone have any idea's ? ? ? ? I'm sure it would have to be a custom job, and not available on a production basis however, It is only "tubing", and with modern "CNC" (Computer Numerically Controlled) bending machines (like in a muffler shop) you can bend anything, into any shape, It probably won't be cheap but, niether is a new outboard after it smashes into a bridge piling from a large wake.
I am sure any good metal shop would be able to fab something up out of aluminum. What my biggest concern would be is how to attach it to the hull. You want to make sure that it is attached in such a way that the first hit it takes it does'nt rip out of its mountings.
Hmmmm, I did'nt think about the mounting part, good point, wonder how that could be done, there's a lot more hull to secure it to on the 22' than the 15'. Thank you for the link Jeff !
