Me again... I hope to make my powering decision soon.. so hopefully the motor questions will stop Smile

How about the Mercury vs. Yamaha 4 strokes? Slight weight difference, how about real world problems? Is the Yamaha worth a couple of hundred over the merc?

Thanks again!

Jeez Josh,

Decisions, decisions. Grin

Honestly do you have a local dealer that you prefer to work with? One that is really trustworthy, honest, and provides great service? If so pick the brand he sells. I would let that decide which motor to buy. There will be very little difference between these motors. Every motor has it's problems and you could find anecdotal incidents of problems for each all over the internet.

Jeff,

That's part of the problem. I have a great merc and yamaha place nearby.

Horrible for me.... Wink

I am leaning towards the merc... its about a $800 difference.

Since the dealer service is not an issue, how about the cost comparison for rigging? If you plan to do it yourself, price out all the gauges, cables, throttle etc and see where you are.

Hope this gets you to the trigger.

I just had the 100HP Yamaha installed. I'm splashing next weekend. Maybe I can give you my impression then.

David,

Me again as well... If you are looking at a few years used could be the same engine, Yamaha made the Merc 4 stroke power heads for a few years up until a 2005 or so ???Shock may be off a year or so... The bandy new ones are a bit different.

Hi Joshua,

If I were to guess, I would say the 05's were merc's but I am really not sure. I assume that you are looking at a 90 HP 4 stroke... The Yamaha forum would be a good place to ask... You will need sign up and join. http://www.yamahaoutboardparts.com/ This is sponsored by boats.net.

Always had Yamaha for outboards ... through the years,.... 40 on the 13, 90 on the Montauk and the 150 on the Outrage. They have been fantastic ! Good luck with your decision ...

The most dependable motor picked overall was Yamaha, Honda was second.
Look at the govt and police boats in your area. What are they using for 7 day a week continous service? They go out a lot more than weekends.
Mercury is the only US make but Black Anchors as they are called here are not seen on the govt, state and city boats. BRP, Yamaha and Honda. No suzuki or merc's.
