Hello to everybody, I have just bought from a private a beautiful 1986 Mountak 17, but when I look at side plate I see this:[img][/img].

7 persons or 935 Lbs
1415 Lbs persons, motor, gear
50 HP

model 17' bare hull.

Someone can tell why is different ?

Many times the dealers will order bare hulls then install a console later. I am sure shipping to Europe it is much cheaper to ship bare hulls stacked like foam cups. There is no difference in the boats yours just had the console bolted in at the dealer instead of the factory.

Thats what I was thinking based on the fact that it was a bare hull.

There seems to be no reason this boat would only be rated for a 50 HP motor???? Even shipped without the console a lighter boat would not cut the rated HP down from 100 to 50???? I think cyclops may have the right idea -- if there was no helm they would ship it for tiller steering which may have been a max 50 HP in that year. There seems to be no logical explanation but that. If you now have a center console in the boat I would use the ratings shown here.

Here is one possible explanation Feel free to disagree with me.

The capacity plate fitted by the factory is only applicable for boats in the US and it's territories. It is probable that Boston Whaler put the plate on knowing this. This hull was shipped and most likely certified by European standards (i.e. UK uses CE).

My question to Rapala is: Does this hull have a separate certification from the maritime regulatory agency in your country? If so, that rating is the one to heed.

A email or call to Chuck Bennett at Boston Whaler (include the HIN # with your correspondence) may get you the definitive answer you seek.

I have a 1970 brochure which shows

13' standard(tiller steering) 20hp max.

rest of 13' models 40hp max.

It doesn't specify max horsepower for the bare hull 17'.

Don't have access to Tom Clark's CD's right now but I would be curious to see what other brochures show.

Hello, and thanks to everybody,
In Europe the original capacity plate hasn' t a real value, before CE regulamentation (about 1998), all the boats can carry 1 person for linear meters.
After CE there is a special plate with the indication of the capacity.
My boat is 1986
For me the important is that the costuction of the hull of mine is the same of the Mountak.
The boat has also the plate of the official importer but there are no indication about motor or capacity.
Where I can find a plate with the correct value of the engine to put on instead of the old one?

Greetings

Rapala

I had a 1987 Montauk and it was rated for 90 hp.

The download section has the graphic. See http://www.whalercentral.com/download...p?cat_id=4 Scroll down till you see it.

I believe Janis @ Magic Brush is producing replacements. I am not 100% sure if it is a decal or the actual plate. She is great source.

You can email her at magicbrsh@bellsouth.net
