Hi guys I just joined this wonderfull whaler board due to the fact I love Boston whalers!!! I have a 1961 13' whaler with a 1962 33hp Johnson motor and it is original from the trailer to the motor it was my Grandfathers boat and is in relativley good shape the wood has been refinished and stored in a garage for years!! the original tops are trashed but the aluminum is still good!! There are some small spider cracks in the blue interior gel coat but it is original, the hull was painted once but looks good!! I would like to restore this boat back to it's original beauty , however I may change the powerplant and would also like to get rid of the nasty cable steering and perhaps monderize that abit!!!! Or is it better to keep it original it sure is a sweet ole whaler
I agree in this is a wonderful site. My boat was stored for 20+ years in a barn, upon clean-up I was shocked at what I had. I kept it mostly as found but all the running gear is brand new,Engine, fuel system, steering and lots of toys.Good luck with the refit and have fun.
J.,
Welcome! You will find all the help for your restoration here that you need. The steering is a point of contention with owners. I have a '68 13' and changed to a teleflex. In retrospect, I think I would have been happier with the pulley system. I had that on an old boat and it worked fine. With small hp motors I don't think it is a safety problem. If you change to teleflex you will need an offset bracket of some kind. There are several options. I am working on one for my boat. You'll find lots of discussion on the topic if you search the site.
You have a GREAT little boat. I call mine the little boat that could.
