Ah that dreaded call from the mechanic, the engine you bought is junk…Sad I bought the boat for the hull knowing that the engine was suspect, but I was hoping the engine would turn out alright; luckily I negotiated just for the hull! I have a 1984 Mercury 75hp on the back of a 1984 17’ classic Montauk. The mechanic said the cylinder compression is 70 psi on one cylinder and 140 psi on the rest. He suggested getting remanufactured power head. I don’t know if I want to make that investment on a 20 year old outboard. Instead, I am looking into a less than 5year old used / remanufactured 4-stroke (preferably Honda). Any suggestions on locations to buy in the vicinity of DC/Maryland? A reputable dealer is better as I want something that will last for years.

The cost of a new 4-stroke is daunting, but doable. I will be going to the Washington DC Boat Show this weekend looking for deals.

Thanks for any suggestions…

Tim

If you are going to buy, buy new. Also do not limit yourself to a 4 stroke. Look at the 90 E-Tecs as well.

Ed's Marine (Va.) is a place to start but they can nickel and dime you.

Here is a place my friend in Newark Delaware uses.

Sturgis Marine, 20676 Sussex Hwy, Route 13, Seaford, DE 19973

He drives over 90 miles for them to service his whaler fleet and he has many other options nearby.

Eds gets pricey once you add in all the extras. If you want a Honda, try Washington Marina (you didn't say where in MD).

I have heard the same thing about Eds (although I have never been). I would wait and see if anything pans out from the DC boat show. It appears Washington Marina will be there, so maybe you could get some boat show pricing?????

As I was pricing out engines, Washington Marina gave me a price for a 90 HP Honda installed for $7500. I didn't go with it, but the price is reasonable.

Thanks for the replies. I live just north of DC, so Washington Marina is a choice and I was planning on checking them out at the show. The mechanic at Curtis Propeller and Marine suggested today that I check out Almars Outboard, Inc.

Almars appears to be pretty decent. My local merc dealer (and I think highly of them) speaks pretty highly of Almars. I was a little concerned at the Baltimore boat show that the Almars guy there suggested I use lag bolts to hold my engine on though.

FYI, Washington Marina has been in existance forever. The used to be a Whaler dealer. They are very Whaler friendly. I'm not pushing them, but use the info however you like.

If there is a company out of Pa and their name begins with Black.... offering rebuilt and a 1 year warranty, check with me before dealing with them
