agrument with dad over engine type (4 vs 2)

trying to convince my pops that we need to hang a 150 suzuki on the back of our newly redone 18 outrage. He wants to stop puring money in and wishes to cut some corners and get a carbed yamaha 2 stroke. I was thinking that was a major set back in technology and have been on him at reconsidering. I have done a ton of leg work on finding the best price on engines and have given him the resutls as follows:
carbed yamaha 2 stroke: 8750 installed after tax.
4 stroke yamaha: 10200 installed after tax
4 stroke suzuki:10,800 installed w/o the tax ( so roughly 11,900)
I have heard so many great things about the suzukis that I think i have become brain washed.
This is my first post on this forum so I felt like sharing the bone I have to chew on right now with the old man.

Well, being in TX I'd imagine you get almost year round use of the boat? Consider the difference in fuel economy between the carbed and 4 stroke engines. From what I've read and owners have told me, it's at least a 30% improvement, maybe more. A lot of guys will say to get the cheaper engine and put the difference in the tank, but I think the wiser route is to go for economy, esp if the $4/gal prediction for next summer comes true. And if you plan on having the boat for a while, there'll be no worries if legislation for emissions gets stricter in your area and you're required to have a carb rated engine. Just a few more points to discuss!

tell your dad this. I was recently not all all interested in another Whaler, when i saw an advertisement for one that had been garaged for 3 years. My interested peaked, i called and arranged to drive up and photo it, strictly to pass along to fellow B.W. central members. I did initally, but after alot of thinking, decided a week later to purchase the boat for myself. Bottom line, tell your dad, he can't take it with him, so go out and buy the dang motor you want and enjoy yourself, cause thats what i did.

You can also get the best of both worlds with new technology, quick hole shot,less weight, unbelievable warranty, great gas consumption priceed less than the 4 stroke. Look in to an ETEC. I'll bet you'll have a hard time finding anyone that owns one that will find fault with it

Are you sure of that Suzuki price? I always read they are cheaper than Yamaha. To be fair, you need to add E-TEC into your list of candidates. Very techy, efficient and not as heavy as a 4 stroke.
Who has better service in your area. This is one aspect that can make a BIG difference.

Lots of good advice here.
Here are your choices for new engines. Take a look at the weight too because this is a very important factor hanging off the back of your beautiful Outrage.

New technology 2 stroke is hard to beat in weight, hole shot, warranty, maintenance and moving parts.
Some people just have to have a 4 stroke..
You will have to decide.....

I am a Yamaha fan however the Evinrude E-TEC is probably the best engine out there. You may like the Suzuki however the E-TEC has a fantastic product and when it comes to repowering my boat, I plan on using the E-TEC.

Second that about the E-TEC. Repowered my 16'7" Eastport last year with a 75HP and couldn't be happier. Check out Perkins Marine in Alvin, TX (Candice and Wayne Perkins). Great folks, wonderful service

Everyone has an opinion on this subject. I think all new motors these days are reliable regardless of manufacturer. I also like the Suzuki's and would spend a few extra bucks myself over the other 2-stroke Yamaha. Not sure what the E-tec costs but I suspect its as much or possibly more then the others? Don't know..Good luck in trying to convince your Dad but if he is paying for the new motor, I guess he will get what he wants. Either way, it will be reliable.

I had originally been with my dad on the ETEC, but when the price tag was 2k more than the cheapest suzuki, I hoped off that boat. And I must have called 20 etec dealers.
