Any fishing reports on the opening weekend for Salmon?
I heard the swells were 10' to 12' out of Bodega. Anyone catch or go out anywhere else?

Went out from Santa Cruz on the openning day (4/2) . Caught only one king about 28" (~6lbs). chop was about 5-8'. and 25knots wind in the afternoon. It was bumpy but fun and glad to make the tradition run on openning day every year . Wind keeps blown on every weekend since then, hope it get better this weekend so I can take my 18' OR out from Half-moon Bay.

Fished Fort Bragg on May 28th. Seas laid down for a couple of days, 5-10knts and 2-4ft swell. A buddy and I kept a 15lbs,14lbs and two 8 lbs. Threw back several 6-8lbs and one coho. While we also lost a couple of fish we didn't see any fish over 20lbs. A very good early season trip. Fished about 1 mile out due west from the outer channel buoy in about 330ft of water. Lots of fish in the area as the charter boats were getting fish, although they were keeping anythin over 20".
Has anyone tried Shelter Cove, Eureka, Trinidad or Crescent City?

Fished Fort Bragg again on July 9th. Fog with no wind and 4-5ft swell. Two buddies and I caught our limit and I fished 3 miles due west of Noyo harbor. Lots of small 4-8lbs fish that we culled through. Kept a #26, 13, 12, 8, 8, 8. Bite was hot until 8am at 20-50 ft and then had to fish on the wire at 100-130ft to get our limit.
This salmon management zone closes this Mon-Fri but opens up again for next weekend.

Planned a trip to Fort Bragg on Thurs July 18th but a major truck break down fouled our attempt. Fished solo today July 20th at Fort Bragg as my buddies passed after Thursday's "adventure".
Heavy Fog on Saturday. Wind 5-10mph. Swell 5-6 ft. I caught a limit by 8:45 am. Fished the same waypoints as July 10th. Caught a #15 and #8. Culled three chinook before keeping the #8. As before, the bite was hot (5 fish landed in 90 minutes) until 8am. Caught small fish at 30-50ft and larger fish 100'+.
Still a lot of fish in the Fort Bragg area. Most of the sport fleet fished off Pudding Creek to the north, while I fished due west. In talking to other boats found out that few fish topped 20+lbs with lots in the teens. Hope the wind lays down again mid week.

Stu,
What boat are you taking out up there?
One of these days I would like to hook up with you when you are in that area.

Hi Joe,
Just realized I got my dates wrong on my last post here, we tried going on the 28th and fished on the July 30th. Anyway......I go out in my Montauk. This summer everything has been in close 1-3 miles. We have run 10 miles north of Fort Bragg in previous years, or run 5-6 miles south of Shelter Cove in other years. If I'm with another boat we will go out 10 miles after albacore, but only on the best of days!!!
Hey Joe or anyone else.....I wanted to post our salmon pictures either in the message or on the site. How do I do this??? And remember that I will never be mistakened for Bill Gates.

Fished Fort Bragg again on Sunday Aug. 14th. Fished the 330ft depth, 3 miles at 270 degrees from the outer channel buoy. Then switched to 300ft due west of Pudding Creek where all the charter boats were. Buddy and I had limits by 8:45 after culling through 8 fish and kept 4. Biggest king was #16, smallest #12. Pretty red hot right now. Lots of boats were coming in with limits by 9:00. Lots of fish but can't seem to find many over #20.

Last Trip to Fort Bragg for the Season on Sat Aug 27th. Three of us fished off Pudding Creek then switched to 330ft depth, 3 miles at 270 degrees from outer channel bouy. Fishing was hot for a while then turned spotty. We got a solid 6 fish limit between 7:00 and 11:00am. 19#, 17,15,13,13,12. We culled plenty of small fish. Best overall limit of the season. Still no big fish over #20, but close.
We troll with anchovy or herring. 2.2 to 2.5 mph. Almost always use a Hot Spot flasher in silver, silver w/ green or silver w/ lime green. We use Krippled anchovy bait rigs in clear, glow or lime green. But sometimes we have tried the E-chip RSK with some luck.

Thanks for the report Stu. Sounds like you had a great fishing trip today.
I hope you can make it to Oregon. I have seen 50 pounders caught. I have had a couple on that were very large but then again, I never saw them. My best there is 35 lbs...

hey anyone in the Ft. Bragg area,,
the fella that sold me my Montauk here in San Diego supposedly bought it from someone that used it for Salmon fishing in the Ft. Bragg area. It's an '87 Montauk that has an extension built on top of the console to add dry space for electronics and an extended windshield.
Just wondering,,
I love the boat.

Rich,
There are several people here that fish Bort Bragg. Hopefully they will respond to this post.
Do you have any photos of your boat that you can put in your Personal Page here?
If not, send me some photos and I will see about putting them in the photo gallery.

cajunman,
I don't recall your 1987 Montauk in Noyo harbor in Fort Bragg. But I only go there during the June-Aug salmon season. Good luck!
Joe K,
Sorry I didn't hook up with you in Oregon. My wife had a baby girl, Ellie Marie (our second) in late August. I managed to get in the Aug 27th trip to Fort Bragg, but trips to Oregon were out of the question.
I haven't been to the coast since then.

Congrats on the baby
I just bought a 1978 Montauk. I am getting the original motor worked and can't wait to go fishing. It's been awhile since I fished for Salmon but Sand Bass and the other species here in so. cal. have been coming alive.
