Louvered doors for a center console

Member Personal Page Posts: 198 Comments: 0 Joined: 11/03/07	Hey All, My good fortune was to acquire a very old but restorarable center console for my 77 Montauk project. It will need some glass work, a new coat of gelcoat and some polishing of the 316 rails, but overall, it should work out fine. The wood is just shot though. The front door, side door and teak accent moldings are either broken or well past the point of restoring. I'll need to replace them. Our friend Jeff suggested AFI products available at Shipstore.com. I am simply looking for any additional suggestions for comparison. If none are available, I am happy with Jeff's suggestion. My woodworking skills are good and I could probably fabricate them, but you know how life gets in the way! I just don't have the time to mill out all the lumber, given all the other demands of the project. I'm willing to break down and buy ready made. Suggestions welcome and thanks. I find it best to do things that I can do myself at significant savings and buy the rest. They were solid panels. The gauge panels were made of mahogany plywood. The only thing I see strange on the console is the odd shaped cutout in the center of the panel. Not sure what someone cut that rectangular shaped hole for. Take a look at this original style console like yours from 1973-1976 http://www.whalercentral.com/readarti...icle_id=58

In looking at the photo again, I should have seen the door was not louvered. The plain Jane facefront is in fact OEM, but I don't really care for the look of it. One of those little things that just makes a Whaler look cool is the louvered door on the console. OK, it ain't spec, but this won't be a concourse restoration anyway. I want to break with that requirement and customize this part. Regarding the cutout: We have no clue what that was about either. We are already working on cutting a wood plug for it which will be used in conjunction with some tiger hair and resin. Don't worry! That thing managed to offend just about everyone that saw it! I promise it will be dealt with. So... what do you think of my idea of putting a door upgrade on? Hey, at least it isn't fuzzy dice. Grady

You can order them from Cedar Lake Manufacturing.
