I have a 1973 evinrude 50hp 2 stroke. Had it out today it was a little cold, but wanted to see what she could do. She has been sitting for about 3yrs(but has had work done). Had a little problem with getting her started. Once we started ran very well. I know she is a very old motor. I just thought mybe there might be a trick. I have been told it is a cold motor. Any help on what might help start up right a way and keep her going once in neutural without raisen the rpm up.
When we first got our Johnson 40 hp, it took me about a month before I realized there was a choke. lol
Without the choke, it was very difficult to start.

If the engine has been sitting for 3 years, then I would suggest having the carbs removed and cleaned ASAP. There is mostly a lean condition now with fouled carbs/jets (the reason you have to keep it revved up at idle) that will cause a major powerhead failure. Older 2-strokes need to be run fairly frequently.
Before you spend any money, or get yourself involved in rebuilding the carbs, do a simple decarb job with a can of seafoam. You will be amazed at how well your motor will run.
