I've just purchased a 2001 Dauntless 160 with a 2001 115 yamaha 4 stroke. The boat has approximately 30 gallons of gas in the tank. The previous owner believes the gas has been in the tank about one year with no stabilizer.

Should I drain the gas and has anybody got any ideas on the best way to go about this?

Thanks, Mike Kenny

Mike,

The 16' Dauntless has a 45 gallon tank. One year is not that long. I would just top off the tank with fresh gas (use Premium if you like) and go run the boat. Change the fuel filter when you get done with that tank if it will make you feel better. I really do not think you will have any problem.

Does the boat have a fuel/water separator? If not, it is worth installing. If it does, replace that filter too.

Mike,
Get a can of sea foam at NAPA or where ever you can find it use as directed, makes old gas burnable, cleans injectors-carbs.
Downside- engine might not like degraded octane fuel.

Mike,
Don't sweat it. I left 1/2 gas in my 18 from August until April, no stabilizer. I filled the tank, added stabilizer at that point, changed the water separator filter and had no issues.

Is the old gas straight gas or is it 10% alcohol. Might make a difference in the life of the gas.
