finally got my whaler home, recently purchased at an estate sale; very excited to start working on it, but will most likely have to wait till spring as its gotten too cold out. it even came with a vintage 4 stroke motor!

any advise for coating the inside of the boat? there are no soft spots, but the gel coat is starting to check in many places.

It's difficult to see much detail as when you click on the picture, the window that opens has the same size picture in it?

Congrats. I had the same hull and condition on my '70 Nauset. Unfortunately the guy I bought it from used a grinder and 40 grit to completely take off the inside gel down to the glass. Sounds ok, but there were grinder circles over the entire inside surface area and I spent 40 hours filling and fairing. If I had your hull I'd sand and epoxy fill the real ugly spots, then try to get the whole inside to the same smooth surface. I'd use an orbital sander with 50 then 80, then 100. After that it's a matter of spraying or rolling 3 coats of one or two part interlux or equivalent. Don't go crazy with bedliner non-skid for the floor, just use the same one or two part paint with non-skid additive.

do you have any before and after pics of your hull?
i was actually thinking of going with a spray in bed liner, but i really like the blue inside so not sure which way i am going to go.

Is the fourstroke running? What is the hp? Are you going to use it? If not there are people looking for one for their Whaler.

yup, its a 55hp bear cat...currently not running. the power head is locked, but i have the pistons soaking. if i feel ambitious i will tear it down and see what it needs. unfortunately i am missing the engine cover.

makes you wonder why it took soo long for 4 strokers to become mainstream when we had them over 30 years ago.

South shore whaler,
If you don't mind please keep me up to date on the Bearcat restoration.
I own a 66 homelite and a 72 bearcat intend to power my Cohasett with one of them. There is precious little information currently available about these engines
save for old Ed Ewing @ Economy 4-Cycle Marine and Scott Stewart
http:/hometown.aol.com/homelite55 and Continous Wave Forum has some archived threads.
Congratulations on your wonderfull find.
Think Spring ;-)
Tom

There is a (shouldn't be telling you this) marine co. So. of Minneapolis
Twin City Outboard has new and used parts including engine cowls.
Please return the favor if you can.
Tom

thanks for the info; upon further inspection mine is also a homelite. also i have actually spoken with Ed, i am going to tear down my motor to see if its rebuildable. if it is i may send it over to him for exchange.

unfortunately, mice where at one time living in the exhaust and stuffed the exhaust ports full of sunflower seeds so not sure what i am going to find when i pull the whole thing apart.

i'll let you know if i wind up parting my motor out, looks like most of it is still good; with the exception of the mid-section of the lower unit, it has a crack that was repaired with epoxy at one time. from what i have read this was a common problem on the homelites (due to exhaust not being cooled properly as it exited through the lower unit) that was corrected when bearkat took over.

you can also get service manuals for this motor on ebay

Just hope the mice didn't designate part of the engine as a toilet.
Got a old Johnson ruined that way.

If savable, Ed could do a upgrade to last Bearcat improvements ie. hardened valve seats, best valve guides, plumbed to hold water in block, and fresh water cooling of the lower leg.

Twin City Outboard should have lower leg and cowl. Got to be cheaper to rebuild than buy a 50 or 60 hp Honda.

How did Ed sound when you talked to him? Does he have someone to take over the business, God forbid he should kick the bucket.

Have you researched shipping powerhead to Redding and back?
Good luck, Tom
