I may have a "barn find." This is very early information, but I discovered a whaler shrinkwrapped and stored, with a history of being unused for a good ten years. It has a Johnson 85 diamond head on it, I can't see the inside as well as I would like due to the wrap. It appears to be 17-18 feet, has a wooden bench seat with the pilot station amidship, no center console, no smirk. In the bow area the floor rises up to a platform with an anchor locker and there is a step from floor to anchor platform on each side with what looks like nonskid pattern on top. There are 316 rails along the side which look just like mine from the 77 Montauk. It's sitting on an ugly but solid Cox trailer.
There is a plate on the transom and I can get the hull number from it. Is there some information encoded in that number which may help distinguish this according to year and/or model?
My guess is circa late 60's. There are not many examples of these in the photo section here so I need help.
Thanks,
Grady

HIN# show up in the 73 time frame, stencil numbers before that. Cox was a late 70's early 80" trailer so your probably in the mid to late 70's. It is possibly a whaler clone , done in the 70's of an earlier model. Get the numbers off the plate but unless it starts with BWC it's not a whaler. Sneak in and grab some photo's.

You have found a Currituck model made from 1962 to 1983 (as the Sport). Obviously if it has no smirk and is blue inside then it can be no later than 1972.

Tom,
would the 72 have a HIN# plate? I would think that if it is smirkless then no hin only stencil numbers?

Hull Identification Numbers (HIN) were not required until November of 1972. That does not mean an older hull cannot have a HIN on them. Some states require HINs so older boats were assigned HINs, usually with the MIC of "Home Built".
Whalers from the early 1970s with HINs did not have a metal (aluminum) tag, they had the HIN embossed (cast, actually) directly into the gel coat of the transom.

I will call the place where this boat is stored and get us some more specific information. The interior appears to be blue. Funny, the shrink wrap is blue so as the light shines through, everything looks blue! More and better information to follow. It has Whaler decals. I'm pretty sure it's not a wannabe.

Jeff,
You might have nailed it. What is the boat in this photo? The caption says "soon to be Nauset." Is this one model which is soon to be converted to another?
This has the steps in the front and the small anchor locker. It's blue. Looks like it finishes with no smirk up front. This is the configuration of the pilot station and seating. I think you're getting warm! Is this a "Sport?"

Look in the Whaler Model/Year Specifications section for photos and info on the Currituck.

Thanks,
This did help. The hull number is 3A3085 which can now be used to peg this as a '70. I was mistaken. There is no hull plate on this one, just a number on the transom. I saw several boats in succession and confused this point in an earlier post The hull color is blue on the interior. I think we have a 1970 Currituck here. We are trying to contact the owner for paperwork. Might become the next project boat. (Like I need another project boat!!)

Grady,
I think we have a 1907 Currituck here.
I wish you had a 1907 Currituck.
It would definitely be worth big bucks...
I know, just a typo............ but what if........

Definitely a Freudian slip! Thread is corrected sorry to say. Still may be worth a buck or two though. She looks to be in pretty good shape. Wonder if anyone would still buy a diamondhead?
