Member Posts: 6 Comments: 0 Joined: 01/08/08	Here is the boat for which I’m building a console and pilot seat. This boat is in excellent shape. Owner had it as a teen - and father passed it along to him. It has been garage kept all its life and hasn't seen much water. I would like to know the year of the boat - owner states his dad bought it in early 70's and it was about 10 years old then - he is second owner. The Stenciled Number has been painted over. I can't see or find the Sprue hole. I need to know exactly where Stenciled Number will be so I can sand-blast off the existing paint and not damage existing paint job. What is unique about this boat is that the original owner chiseled out a small rectangular hole under the seat. Then he installed two extremely large battery cables back to the motor. Cables in back are for motor. This boat was orginally purchased with a 40 HP Evinrude. It has a 75HP installed (bought in early 70's) and he is upgrading to a brand new 90HP. As noted in the thread on stencil number location, several 1963 boats have the number in the forward wall of the bow locker. If you think this is a 1962, that would be my first choice, second would be the stern. My question would be why the need to know? The stencil number may actually be on the boat paperwork as the HIN# so I would personally check that first. Stencil Number Location

At some point in the boats life, the transom number had been obliterated, but the anchor locker number was well preserved. If I remeber correctly, it was centered on the forward bulkhead. Doug

Member Posts: 6 Comments: 0 Joined: 01/08/08	Owner has found no document that specifies the number. He stated his dad used his military ID along with 61 as the number for the boat registration. LOLs. He is pretty sure it's a 61. I liked the way Jeff pointed it out on the stern. I think we will use a wire rotary brush to get the old paint off in this area and then lightly sand. If it is not found, then we will put up the picture of the sanded area and then repost and ask for the specific location within the forward locker. We will need someone to point out exactly where in the forward locker it is located (similar to Jeff's outline)- is it bottom (center - left, right, front or back)? How can you tell when you've hit the gel-coat so we can stop? BTW – Jeff - I love the Smirked Heritage Design. We may get some items.

[img]http://www.whalercentral.com/images/ppimages/4722/16stencil3.jpg[/img] This is what you should run across and if you do not, take your hard work and sand paper to the front locker. You should know when you hit gelcoat as you will be able to smell the resin when sanding as well as the gelcoat is more difficult to sand through. They could also be a color change like seen in the image. BTW, thanks about the designs. I hope to have the new ones up this weekend. In this thread it has been stated that if the Stenciled Number is in the bow locker, it is to be found on the forward wall of the bow locker. Is there any photographic evidence of either location? Early Whaler hulls had the Stenciled Number in the bow locker, not in the splashwell where it later became more common.
