Found this and wonder if it's a good fit for my '69 16 footer. I presently have an older Yamaha 115 2 stroke, but it's missing powertrim. Any opinions on the price and suitability of this motor?
I have seen 115's on Montauks before but all of them were Smirked hulls. I would assume your hull would do fine with it however, I would image it would very fast with the minimal dead rise of you hull. Though the motor looks to be in good shape, I personally think they are maybe $1000 to high on the asking price. That motor would sell for just 1 - 3 hundred dollars more at my mechanic's shop and it would have rebuilt carbs, rebuilt powerhead, new VRO, and the lower unit gone through all with a 90 day warranty.
Maybe this motor is different but most motors off pontoons are some of the most neglected and poorly maintained outboards. I would have a though time buying a used pontoon motor.

There are a couple of obvious (no insult intended) issues. Perhaps you are aware and are purposely looking past them.
1. Its a 25" shaft. Most people use a 20" shaft on that boat.
2. Its a 115 HP engine. The boat is only rated to 100HP. While people do mount 115HP sometimes, be aware that you likely will not be able to insure the boat.
Food for thought. I have been told by several marine mechanics to stay away from used motors that have been on a pontoon boat. They normally run at WOT 95% of the time.

Not true. You can insure the boat, just be honest and tell your insurance agent the HP. There is no federal law against powering a boat with an engine larger than the capacity plate. There may be state laws, but no federal. If your insurance agent doesn't want to write the policy there are plenty that will, you just need to ask.
I think it was a nauset. I bought it without a center console, and added an after-market console. Installed a 90hp, 4cylinder, carbed Johnson. Due to weight, my preference was for a 3cylinder 90 yammie, but couldn't find a used one. ( There is a reason for that!!) Slightly lower in the water. If I had to do it over, I would have waited on a 3 cylinder 90. Just my opinion. Boat ran great but there was one issue. PM if you would like.
You definitely need a 20" shaft or a jackplate.
I would not buy Direct Injection from those early year johnsons either. Just my opinion.
Thanks for the replies. I should have mentioned that I went through the discussion about "overpowering" when I first got the boat (with a Yamaha 115 twostroke mounted on it.) However, I did miss the fact that the one in the ad was a 25" shaft. Glad you brought that up.
Around here, people use pontoon boats in the Susquehanna River, and many of the boats/motors are very lightly used, and sometimes well maintained. With the shallow rocky bottoms, however, the lower units are often damaged. Obviously, that's easy to spot.
I'll keep my eye out for another one. Really, I'd like to find a 90 HP... either Yammie or Johnson/Evinrude, but when you're shopping used, you have to take a look at what's out there.
Here is an idea, get friendly with some of the Evinrude or Yammie mechanics in your area. Tell them what your looking for used. Ask them to call you when they do a trade, first one to find you an outboard wins. ( just really be ready to purchase). With the incentives out there lots of people repower now and if they can pull it and mount it, they are happy. You get the engine you want, your happy.
