I just bought a 1984 17' Montauk and am starting to attack the fix it list. One item is replacement of the safety horn which sounds like a dull dying cow. The previous owner had a black AFI mini tucked away in the top of the Fire Extinguisher pocket on the right side of the consol. It doesn't seem to me to be the best location as I am sure the noise level is considerably reduced there. Is there a standard location for the horn placement? Were electric mini horns OEM items? On the OEM parts page, I noticed a picture displaying one just aft the Fire Extinguisher pocket.
In looking at all the options, I was planning on a recessed one but after mulling it for awhile I realized I did not want to cut another hole in my console and I often ship water over the bow. Mounting it on the forward side would lead to more wear and tear. I settled on the one you are describing I think. See this in white. I plan to mount in on the side of the console above the extinguisher box. Hope it lasts a few years. While I have read of members installing them inside the console, I think it defeats the purpose of the device, to be loud.
