Just purchased my first whaler (1992 Montauk with 1999 90hp Yamaha). Boat is in great condition and I'm proud as I can be. I'm curious about a rubber knob on the bow of the boat. Previous owner is not sure what it is either as he bought the boat used as well. I'm thinking may be something to do with an anchor rest in the past. It's rubber, with a hole in the middle where a screw connects it to the boat. Probably a couple inches wide and tall. Don't think it's associated with a trolling motor as it's on the other side.
While I'm here, may I get advice on the anchor set-up? I have a small anchor that will fit into the hatch okay, but when fishing, seems like a pain to constantly be putting in/out of the hatch. Also don't want to leave it laying out where it might ding the boat. My previous boat had an anchor pulpit, I'm wondering if I might build a small wooden platform to rest the anchor on (where it remains out of the box). I'm thinking of something nicely built with a good marine varnish.
Finally, I have a few small chips and screw holes. Marine Tex work or should I be aiming for another solution?
Thanks and love this site; great for a newbie like me. -Kyle.

Whaler never offered a bow pulpit on the 17 hull. Some have built their own though. I personally never had any issues hauling and storing an anchor in the front locker.

Spectrum offered the best gelcoat repair as it is color matched to the factory color. Here is a link.http://spectrumcolor.com/catalog.htmatalog.htm Click on Gel Coat products then boston whaler.

Kyle,
Describe the knob better. Post a photo if you can. Does the knob protrude skyward or is it extending from the front of the bow horizontally? I'm wondering if it was put as some kind of a protective bumper due to a situation at the dock where it was moored.
Just a thought..
I envy you the Yamaha! I have a 1979 Evinrude 55 HP, busted skeg, no power tilt/trim, butterfly valve carb; state of the art all the way. Wanna trade? I'll even throw in the piece of firewood used to brace it for trailering for free!
Hey, welcome to the site. Let's see a picture so we can try to figure out the bumper. Do you have any other questions about your boat?

Hi Kyle,
Post a few pictures, someone will know what that knob is for. I can't imagine what it would be for other than something to secure the anchor. BTW, I also have a 17 with a 90 Yamie. It is a Super Sport Limited; the hull is the same for all of the 17's of that era to 2002. I would be interested in your performance data when you have a chance to really run it.
Jeff I would be interested in knowing what you decide to do. The inside of my locker/ice chest at the bow got a bit banged up from a large anchor bouncing around in there with no protection... Now I have a few bumpers wedged in there.
God Luck!

i have had the same issue with the anchor in the fore storage bin so i purchased a cajun anchor. depending on where you drop hook (depth, substrate, etc.) this could be the answer for you. when setting it in mud in about 3 feet of water, it comes up fairly clean and holds pretty well. I plan on storing it in my sun umbrella tube (see my personal page) or setting up another tube to store it in. I plan on using it this weekend for the first time; i will report the results later.

For the anchor, I have seen and read of several methods that work well. Here is some background.
After 3 years in a classic Montauk and Outrage 17 (same locker setup) I use a bruce style claw anchor. I lined my locker with Dri-Dek. Have a coil of 100' of 1/2" line laying on the bottom. On top of that is the anchor with 7' of anchor chain (3/8 in). Chain on top. Last is the 50' line with a PDF on top. The anchor does not shift, even in nasty pounding.
To deploy, I grab the top coil and set it on the cooler cushion. Grab chain and drape on my shoulder. Grab anchor and walk back to amidships to deploy. Walk forward and secure.
For Danforth anchors, some cut a bucket and all the gear sit in that. Some guys store all the gear in the stern and avoid the bow locker completely.
While a pulpit would solve your issue, you may run into design issues with the bow light.
Congrats on the boat.

jaemrich,
A real cajun anchor is a cinder block tied to the end of a rope. We call what you posted a "mud spear" and they are available at Academy.
Kyle,
the rubber piece sounds like a hardware store bumper sometimes used as a "foot" for chairs, trunks, etc.. Following the hardware store mindset, I guess any set of brackets fastened to the side shaped to fit your particular anchor would work, but not be shipshape or professional. I only offer this in case fishing is more important to you than style.

Thanks for the advice thus far. By the way, I bought a boat posted on this site:
http://www.whalercentral.com/forum/vi...ad_id=2930
Ad incorrectly noted some dates - boat is a 1992 and motor is 1999 (less than 100 hours); never been in salt water (until my first ride on Christmas Day). Thanks David on my 1st Whaler.
Anyhow, I hope I'm doing this correctly - here is a link to some pics:

She's a beauty Kyle, really pretty. You may get the "stump the chump" award though for that rubber knob! I have no clue. I was thinking maybe a rest for a bimini or antenna, but with seeing the photo now?? Can't wait to hear what the concensus is.

There are a couple of rod holders mounted to the cockpit rails on the port and starboard aft. If they swivel and you had a rod in one and swiveled the rod forward would the rod lay down between the rubber knob and one of the forward stanchions? If you swiveled the rod forward and then tied it down to a stanchion standoff the rubber knob might keep the rod from moving from side to side? I don't know why there isn't one on the starboard side except that the trolling motor is there.
My two cent guess.

I've got it!!!!!!!
Clearly that black knob is there as a cushion for the boat when it is in the garage. It keeps the garage door from banging the boat when it comes down.
I knew I would figure it out once I saw the picture.

Wait a minute...
I just figured it out..
It is a conversation piece...
I guess if you (or we) can't figure it out, then you probably don't need it.
It did not come from Boston Whaler so someone added it on for some unknown reason.

Is the rubber thing to catch the bow locker from slamming?
If it isn't. I would remove it and fill the hole with spectrum's color matched gel coat repair paste and put us out of our misery!
Then again, remove it regardless.

Thanks for the humor fellas. Maybe I'll use the boat a little before taking it off. Who knows, maybe it will become obvious at some point. Could be a priceless idea that you all will be begging me to copy some day -hee hee. Right now I'm thinking of using it as a fine cigar holder for when I have to set the Macanudo aside while I reel in a big fish.

I also liked CBO's suggestion but didn't have access to my boat to see if the thing was in the right place when the hatch was open.
It certainly is a good conversation piece though.

My rub rail has the same vertical grooves in it that yours does. Mine are from pulling up crab pots and allowing the line to cut into the rail. I wonder if the previous owner would pull up something heavy on a line and then set it on the rubber thing in order to re-grip and lift the heavy object over the rail? John

Kyle,
I told you you were going to stir up a fuss! Next thing you know, Joe is going to be offering a full line of these fashion accessories in his store. I notice you don't mention where you live. Probably a good thing 'cause if you don't take it off, the nearest one of us might have to visit your boat at night and do the right thing for the good of the community. We can't just stand by and have knobs screwed to our whalers now can we?
Thanks for the great chuckle Kyle. Happy New Year to you,
Grady
