Hi all, recently purchased my first whaler. a vintage 66, non-smirked (learned that here!). its in great conidition for its age and i purchased from the original owner.
its really dirty right now, but i am confident that this will clean up really nice. doesnt appear to have much wear and tear on it, other than from the weather.
hull, floors, transom are all super solid, although i am sure i will find something after it gets a good cleaning. o yeah and the console is shot.
it even came with the original outboard, although, i am not sure if it would be worth rebuilding.
any advise?? lay it on me, i am sure i will be posting many questions in the future.
also thanks to whalercentral for this great resource! i probabley would not have purchased it were it not for this site and its tech content and member advice.
you can see pics here.

Best Advice I can give you is to ask a lot of questions of others on this site as there is a wealth of knowledge and experience here and above all be very patient and don't rush any of the restore steps.

OK,
Let's clean her up a bit and get a good look at the deck. Is she watertight or are there open cracks in the glass? Nice to see some original hardware such as bow light, etc. Save it. You'll appreciate later how hard it is to find these. That blue color is probably something that you will find gelcoat repair material for if you need that.
Keep us posted as the project moves on. You can tap the people here for parts , advice or support. You're gonna' need all of those sooner or later! She looks like a fun starting point.
One of your photos is labeled Transom and shows a view of the transom on a bit of an angle. In the photo, the transom appears to be rather bowed out. Is it really that way or is the photo just making it look funny?
The best statement I have read so far on this site goes like this: Enjoy the process! Take your time, do her proud. Good luck. We'll help you if we can.

SouthShoreWhaler,
That was the best $400 whaler I have seen in a long time. All in all it looks pretty solid and the shot of the transom looks good to me. If there are not cracks running a long the top cap it should be in pretty sound condition. On the first warm day take it to a quarter squirt car wash and clean it out. I think it should wash up well. Remember not to blast the spray to close or to hard in any spot as it can cause blistering in fiberglass. Looking forward to seeing more pictures when the project get rolling, or should I say floating.

Phil,
You know, it is a kind of car wash typically with concrete stalls. You put the quarters in to operate the pressure washer and scrub brush...."quarter squirt cash wash"

Looks solid, start cleaning, remove as much as you can, get the hull washed up, these boats bounce back surprisingly well, after a good cleaning, the boat will look a lot better, good resto. project, it should'nt take long to bring her back. don't throw anything out until you are sure that you don't need it.

"and the shot of the transom looks good to me."
Good. You can see where the concern came from in the photo, but it's probably just due to the angle. BTW Jeff, what are you doing on the computer? You should be out there shoveling like all the other Detroiters!! Good luck.
South Shore Whaler,
I am also doing a resto on a boat a little newer that yours. Mine was purchased with some aftermarket replacement parts such as a Todd console and cooler/leaning post. I will not be reusing them and they are sitting in the barn. At some point, I hope to find someone who wants to use them in their boat. They are not OEM, but they worked for my previous owner for years. If your project needs things, they are available. Unfortunately, I don't have very much to offer as far as parts are concerned, but these might help you. There are other people here who have access to much more.
Careful with that quarter squirt car wash. You'll shoot your eye out!

Congrats on the whaler. I've got a '68 I'm working on and let me tell you, it's a lot of fun! You described the console as being "shot". What do you plan on doing with it as I am currently trying to find one for my boat. Thanks and again, congratulations!

Excellent find ! That will be a fun project especially when you start to see results. My '70 Katama looked VERY similar 4 months ago after I rescued her from an uncut hay meadow...she had dirt, mildew, moss and assorted other flora growing on her. After taking out all the innards and lots of scrubbing, I could start to see her former glory. Be prepared to compound and compound and compound. I did mine three times but it has a great shine now so don't give up on yours...the shine will come back. I plan on putting mine in the water for the first time this Friday after 4 months of work. I couldn't agree more with the other posts about asking questions on this site. I exposed my ignorance several times but received nothing but quality, time saving advice. Don't be afraid to ask anything, the members and administrators are a remarkable resource. I agree that the first step should be to clean her up and check for exposed cracks. Once you have evaluated the hull structure, ask some more questions for the next steps. The end result will be well worth the effort so don't give up on her. Just ask questions when you hit a snag. Have fun! Paul

SouthShore,
From the pics, it's tough to tell if the stuff on your console is IN it, or ON it....
Looks like the front bench is shot....all bent out of shape....not a problem....
I trust you are going to pull (carefully) the console out as you get deeper into the hull.....
DO NOT add the console to your Yule fire!.....
Start with a green scrubby pad and clean the sucker....
Check carefully to see if the flora is growing ON the old varnish, or if it has penetrated into the plywood...if it has, the "veneer" surface of the ply will be delaminating....long cracks...going with the grain of the mahogany ply....nasty stuff.....the ply is then toast...not worth breaking your elbow to restore....it'll look like crap no matter what you do!
However....if the layer of veneer is reasonably solid.....the console can be carefully sanded and restored....be careful NOT to sand too heavily...you'll go right through the 3/32" mahogany "veneer"...not a good thing.....
Even if the ply is shot...DON'T lose the solid mahogany parts!
New ply pieces can be retrofit onto the old structurals.....
I have plans for the original windshield, or can build one for you....
I know...the pilot seat looks like crap...all grey and nasty....start sanding....it's solid mahogany....it'll come back very nicely...you'll be very surprised and proud of what looks like a "classic" restoration, when she's scootin' around Great South Bay.....best of luck!
It's a shame that boat sat under the old oak in the back yard for so long...BUT!
As tough as they are in the water....they're just as tough sittin' on a rusty trailer waitin' for somebody like you to come along...
For all the money you're gonna spend...the only price you're going to remember is the cost of "elbow grease".....but it's worth every penny.

After just completing the restoration of all the wood on my 63 Nauset, I would like to advise you to SAVE all that wood. Once you scrub it off, I think you might find that some (or much) of it is worth keeping. It will be amazing what some sand paper does to it. Don't be afraid to re-use wood that has some staining on it. Thats what gives it charactor.

danedj -- nice pic! thankfully the winsheild has been stored in doors the whole time so its still in good shape
davidk - i am definately going to save whats salvageable, unfortunately the seat is pretty trashed, but there should be some re-usable parts from the console.
the original owner actually gave me untill feb 2008 to get it out; so i still havent gotten it home yet, i hope to get it home some time after new years & cant wait to start working on it.

I would get it out of there before the owner has a change of heart!
