I acquired a 1999 23 outrage that sat for about 5 years. It's equipped with a 225 Mercury Optimax. Last year I had to have the bad fuel pumped out and per the repair write up they cleaned the fuel pumps (and used what appears to be a very expensive fuel pump kit - sorry but I wasn't smart enough to get part numbers). When we took the boat out this season it still won't run above 2500 rpm. So it's in for repairs in Harrison Township and after getting new plug and wires they say it needs the VST pump in the engine replaced.
I'm not a mechanic - so just how many pumps are there in the fuel system for this boat/engine?

VST - Vapor Separator Tank.

There are low pressure and high pressure fuel pumps.

Was the fuel system drained last year so that you used FRESH fuel this year?

If not, you need to drain all the fuel and use fresh fuel and then test the boat to see if that is really the problem.

All fuel put in the boat should be treated with a stabilizer product that prevents phase separation.

If your boat is not used frequently, the tank (not the engine) should be drained. Use the fuel in your vehicles.

Thanks for your reply. I had the old fuel pumped out last year and added stability but unfortunately the boat didn't hit the water until September this year. It would have gotten used a lot more had my boat hoist not still have a piling lying on top of it curtesy of Michigan winter ice.
