I just bought a 77 Montauk with a Johnson 90 VRO on the back.Took it for a 3 hour tour of Lake Lanier Ga. today. This was the first time I have ever been in a Whaler. Nice Boat!! I had a76 Custom Craft with a 85 Merc. on the back. The whaler is a much better and superior boat to the old custom craft. How fast should this boat go?I got 31 Knots out of it today with two people on board.I look forward to next spring when we get some water back in the lake. This site rocks!

MudmanH -
I was just going to ask how much water you have down there! No worries - that boat doesn't draft too much!
With the right prop and if the engine is strong, you should see 41-42 statute MPH on the GPS at WOT fully trimmed and lightly loaded.
You're right - that is a great boat - perhaps one of the best models that Whaler ever made - I can tell you guys have a lot of adventure ahead of you (so long as you don't run out of water down there...if so - bring it on up here - we have plenty in the Great Lakes!

Dave,
They say the rest of the ramps on Lanier will close when the lake reaches 20ft below full pool. That is expected to happen in the next couple of weeks. That was the reason for the ride today. I paid 4000 for the boat motor and trailer. The boat and motor are in good shape for a 30 year old boat. I don't know the year of the motor yet. Maybe someone on here can help. Its a 90 Johnson VRO discontected.The serial #is6122975. I have looked for a good Johnson site with out much luck.The trailer is going to need new springs, axle and bunks this winter. I do have some spider cracking on the gel coat inside. The outside is pretty free of spider cracks.It has a few chips at the stern but only 3 or 4.I am pleased with my investment. I Am Selling my 66 Bronco Rock Buggy to pay for the Whaler.

Pat,
Congratulations on your new to you Montauk.
We need to know the Model # of the engine to give you the year.
Should be something like J90xxxxxx
Not sure how many letters behind the 90.....

Hi Mudman,
I have a 17 BW Hull with a 90 Yamie. I can squeeze 5200 RPM trimmed out. I am guessing it will run in the low 40's. Gear ratio is 2:0. Based on this and some prop slippage it should run in the low 40's per the formulas… Next season will track it with a GPS. I will also tweak this prop and go for a set back jack plate which will allow me to raise the engine a tad.
good luck with the new boat

Many other boats and outboards in my boating history
The Whaler is the one I like the best!!! |

I'd be interested to find out how many F-150's get stuck in the mud at the end of the ramps once the level goes below that water mark - not a lot keeps fellas from their fishing!
Sounds like a nice boat - great for using as is and probably a good candidate for full restoration if you have the time or inclination.
Congratulations!

Congrats on the new boat... use her in good health! Oh yeah welcome aboard too! You have found the best group of Whaler lovers out there.
Here is a pic of Lake Lanier I saw on another site.... pretty scary

Joe,
I went out and looked at the Johnson and found these numbers on a metal plate.The numbers are J90TLCO8.The C could be a 0 but looked like a C to me.I am going to continue asking questions as we go along here.
The next one is what is the proper way to repair screw holes through the Gelcoat?The screwholes on the anchor door has been moved to the side because they stripped out. TIA

J = Johnson
90 = hp
T = Trim & Tilt
L = Long Shaft (20 inches)
CO = year of model which equals 1985
So you have a 1985 90 hp Johnson.
I had a 1985 70 hp Evinrude on the back of my 1978 Montauk.
These are great engines if taken care of.

I forgot to mention the last letter.
I think that should be a "B" instead of an 8....
This is essentially the latest revision that the engine had installed before it shipped out.

Joe,
I am used to mixing oil with the gas so the old motor should last a while I hope.Someone stripped off the injection trash. The tach has a short in it somewhere. But it worked for the first ten minutes or so. It showed 5000RPM'S atWOT. This boat may not have the right prop on it. My old Merc 85 turned a 13X17 if I remember right.I have no idea what prop is on it. What prop would you use on a 17 Montauk? What RPM should this motor operate at? TIA

I am rebuilding my trailer: springs, hubs/bearings, rollers, all frame hardware, lights, etc; even treated myself to bearing buddies. Total material cost is under $300, labor "free" - I am recently retired.
If you have a good frame, wheels/tires, axle and some time on your hands; no need to invest in a new trailer.
Bunk replacement is not that expensive; especially, if you just need carpet.
Enjoy

Pat,
How did it look out on the Lake? What ramp did you use?
I just bought a 2003 Montauk that I am in process of re-rigging a 90 Yamaha 2-Stroke on. Previous Merc power was stolen.
This site is excellent. I have been lurking around here for some time absorbing all of this great information!

Greg,
I put the old girl up until spring. I have a big job going in Nashville Tn. for the next 5 months or so. I still have to get the axle fixed on the trailer before I can use it much.
