When I inquired regarding the purchase of a new 90hp engine, I was told that I could not use the existing Morse controls. Yet I see pics of Etec's mounted and there is a Morse control plain as day on the console.

When I said I would want it 2 holes up they also said it depends on how it lines up.

Some dealers really steam my glasses with their BS.

What is the engine brand and model? Is it because the new engine is electric shift and throttle rather than mechanical?

The engine can be mounted in ANY postition YOU want, it is your 12-14K.

If the dealer will not install it the way Whaler owners know is acceptable, Buy the engine in the crate from them and FIND another dealer who has 1/2 a brain cell in their head.

If the prior installer used the blind holes or did not follow the BIA standard, have them fill the incorrect holes with wood plugs, dipped in epoxy and drill new holes that follow the BIA standard.

There is a drawing in the reference section that shows the holes and which to drill.

The shear laziness and/or lack of knowledge of some installers has no limit.

Yeah I saved the drawing previously. It just kind of frosted me when I got push back before I even purchased an engine.

I guess I'll have to research the shift and throttle system.

No purchase yet. I'm in the middle of a move so really just research now.

You can use a Morse MT-2 or later Morse MT-3 with any brand 90 HP engine.

I strongly recommend use of new Domitar Sea Star "XTREME" cables for super smooth operation, almost DTS like.

At the control end the Morse uses the universal ends in the 33 series. The engine end varies with brand. You can buy engine specific ends for Mercury and Evinrude.
All of the Japanese brands use the same 33 series universal ends.

With any engine, you will need a separate power trim switch. Mercury offers a nice panel switch and harness that can be wired to any brand engine harness.

I have this control on two Whalers, and they are still the best you can buy. I upgraded to the Ongaro chrome/red stripe knobs, which fit your hand better and look great.

I have the MT-3. I think I bought cables already and have them stashed.

That is some awesome info Fin. I bought a trim n tilt switch new old stock for the existing Johnson 70hp.

I guess dealers don't always know what's up, eh?

Just to update... I recently moved to the Oregon coast. I am not quite settled yet but started calling around about engines. Found a 90hp ETec north of me but got the same response when asking about my Morse controls. "The ETEC won't work with that control'. Haven't heard a word from them since asking them to check into it. They wanted full price for the engine @ 10,6K installed.
On an F70 the Yammie dealer told me the same thing.
Pretty frustrating trying to keep the old look.

A friend of mine purchased a left over E-tec 90 for $7800. (plus sales tax) in Green Bay WI, bolted on the boat but not rigged up. He will be using the original MT-2 on his Sakonnet.

G -

I think the response you received is more a product of "I don't want to deal with this" and "I install engines the way I want to".

I installed a new E-TEC 90 on my Outrage in May. Installer asked what I wanted for rigging. Take your pick.

Just about effort.

Prices are high for an engine a dealer has in stock. Hearing $800-$1200 higher than pre-covid.

Phil, did you use modern controls? The dealer claimed engine needs to talk with the controls. Haha.

Finn if I had gotten that quote I would have jumped too. I do have the benefit of no tax in Oregon.
