Hello all, just joined. I got a great deal on a 2005 Evinrude ETEC 200 to put on my Outrage 18. Upgrading from an older 1993 Ocean Pro 150. The hp rating on the hull is 150 but the 2.6 ltr. small block etec came in 150/175/200hp versions and all are identical in weight. I saw no downside to exceed the 150hp rating as the weight is the same, just gives me a few more ponies at top end. Any concerns on this setup and what should be the mounting hole height for this engine on this hull?

Engine should be mounted at least 2 holes up, top bolt in 3rd hole counting down from the top.

Only concern I would have is extra torque on the transom.

Thanks guys. Local Evinrude shop is doing it and knows the whalers well to mount as you suggested.

As for transom torque, it shouldn't be an issue. They told me the engine is essentially the same as the 150 version, just remapped EMM and some other tweaks for a wider rpm band. Engine makes peak torque at about 5,100-5,300 RPM. I'll be able to swing a larger pitch and probably get it close to 50mph. Hole shot should be insane. They did 2 other. outrage 18's with same set up and were amazed.

I am not sure about Conn. but in Florida, it is Illegal (State Law) to exceed the Horsepower rating. If you are involved in a accident, then horsepower is the problem, you are liable.

Insurance companies do Not insure illegal boats, liability again. I know of one who does, but they have a statement saying If the boat is Illegal at the time of the accident, then the claim will be Denied.

If the boat is under warranty, then That would be denied.

A responsible Boat Dealer should Not break the law.

The horsepower rating is determined by tests completed by the Boat manufacturer in accordance with the CFR (code of federal regulations. The numbers are there for a reason, and weight is only part of the tests.

Your choice.

Thanks Wrangler.

Thanks for your perspective. I understand all the threads on hp regulations and CG rules and formulas. CT has no such law and as I said it is exactly the same motor as the 150 with basically re flashed MMM for a different curve. While the top speed potential is greater, I could care less as I never operate a boat at those speeds, no need. It will give me a better hole shot and cruise, however. I don't care about any insurance on it other than liability which my insurance company is willing to write and there is no warranty on a 1986 boat nor. 2005 motor at this point so nothing to void.
