Last spring I purchased a 1975 Newport 17 and trailer with no motor. The boat is in great shape and has a nice steering wheel, morse controls, and decently new throttle and shift cables. Last fall I bought a 1998 90 hp Johnson 2 stroke that should run, and it came with all the necessary electronics and controls (that I ended up gutting so that I could mate the electronics to the shiny morse control). Other than that I have literally nothing else. What do I need to buy? I have a good relationship with a local marina but they are slammed with business right now. I'm pretty handy and have access to a lot of tools.
I'm pretty sure I need the following: Gas tank, oil tank, battery, and gauges, probably a new impeller but I'll let the marina take care of that.
But I have no idea if that is everything, or if it's even correct.
I really just want to have all the correct and necessary parts so that when it gets handed off to the marina they'll just plug and play.
This is my first boat and I just want it in the water this season, any help would be great thanks!
The boat is your clean slate to add whatever you want. For the outboard, so is it VRO or is it premix. Will the prop work with the boat, does i have a prop? Gauges to have, tach, volt, water pressure if you have the hook up. For controls you will need for the cables and evinrude connectors for the motor and morse connectors for the controls ( which may still be in the controls). Morse is univeral and most cable hook straight up. A separate trim switch if going with the morse cause the evinrude has a trim switch on the handle. Morse does not. They make dash mount or blinker style. If you have kids you might want to use the evinrude controls because they are safer than morse.
This is not in particular order. Outboard mounting bolts ( marina will have them). Outboard sealer have them. Sealant, boat life. steering arm and outboard adapter, battery cables and post unless your outboard cable reach the battery, a battery, OMC oil tank if you are not premixing which I recommend premixing. Fuse block and negative bus bar and nav switches to control the gauges lights. Main battery switch. A ground accessible for the gauges. All positive power for gauges and ignition come from the motor and only nav lights on the gauges use separate power. Ground from bus (battery). Speedo if you have a empty hole in the dash. Overtons and amazon sell Gauge sets like Sierra. Garmin GPS fishinder (again what I suggest, to each their own) Have marine install while doing the outboard. Cup holder for beer.
