The Whaler community has lost a veteran member.

Rich, aka Binkie, was a veteran owner and a great guy. He will be missed.

Below is a message from Rich's son.

I wanted to let those who remember my dad Richard Messineo ("Binky" "Binkster") that my father passed away last Friday after being very ill for the past year. He was a frequent contributor on the forum although I am not sure he has posted here for the past 5 years. Yes, he had fun being sarcastic at times and got kicked off this forum more than once (which I think he thought was kind of fun). He was also very talented and a kind and loving father. The boats he restored are more than beautiful and I hope that his contributions here have helped some of you with your boats.
He shared his love of boats with me and as his daughter he always encouraged me to do anything I set my mind to. Especially those things that were considered "activities for boys". I will never sell the 13' Whaler that he and I restored together in the early 2000s.
He also restored a beautiful 1960s 13' Whaler named "Sweeet 13" that was sold around 2016.

Binkie helped many of us out and was a member here since 2005

He wrote an article for our members on how to wrap the steering cable for the Classic 13' models.

Our condolences to the family.

Thank you for the kind words. I just joined this website to read some of my dad's posts today. It helps a little as I am missing him. I was lucky to have such a kind and talented dad.

Enjoy reading of your Dad's exploits, he was very generous with his knowledge and experience. It is a loss for all of us.

So sorry for your loss. You are a member now, feel free to share your Whaler adventures.

I will stay around this site as I need to come to the Whaler websites now for my dad's advice on boats. In the past I could just call him up or invite him for dinner. I still have the 1974 13' Whaler that my dad and I (my help was mostly a lot of sanding) restored to original condition back in 2002. I am also inheriting his beautiful 15' Whaler that has not been in the water since he finished restoring it back in 2014. It is bittersweet because even though I am thrilled to have the boat and will keep it always, I'd rather he was using it.

I am having a really hard time with this loss and it helps to read some of his post on these Whaler websites today. If you are interested there are some photos of my dad and the many boats he has restored during his lifetime on the "tribute wall" on his obituary (link below).

And I will be surprised at this fellowship departure..
I have enjoyed word fencing with him often and had fun doing it.I did especially enjoy his life chapter involving his newest Donzi hull.Never heard on how the chapter ended up but entertaining it was.I did have the opportunity to chat with him on the phone once and found him to be considerate d and polite..Made me wonder if at times someone else was using his handle and texted under his name.Binky was at times obvious but always very entertaining..Who could ever forget his video posting about "My Big Ole Johnson".
