Any trailer recommendations for a 1985 Montauk 17 hull, w 2019 Mercury 90? I need to get a new one, old one is on it's last leg.

What state do you live in?

Most trailers are regional. Knowing your location will help with brand/model recommendations.

Also share:

Amount of use, i.e do you use it twice to launch or retrieve? Do you travel from MI to FL twice a year.

Rough roads or highways?

Salt or fresh water?

Store outside, in warehouse or in a garage. If garage, what is total depth to inside of door?

Giving us detailed information allows us to give you detailed answers.

Live in North Carolina, I mostly keep the boat on the trailer in my driveway and transport back and forth the the lake and 2 hrs to the coast from time to time, so yes it is in salt water. Mostly highways or good roads with my town. Stored outside in my driveway.

Thanks

I understand there is a trailer shortage, at least in my area. I'm just looking for suggestions once the shortage is over, hopefully by early 2021.

While there was a surge of demand for loose trailers when owners were doing DIY boat projects in the spring, early summer that may have subsided with the end of the boating season in the North east and Mid-Atlantic states.

I have had good experiences with Load Rite brand.

As for model, for the classic Montauk 17 I would recommend:

Galvanized - 17245090VT

Shop several dealers hard because prices vary WIDELY. Think new car shopping. Do research, get detailed quotes, etc.

Order in January for spring delivery.
Most dealers do not have inventory. Will need to wait for orders.

Search craigslist. Many trailer dealers advertise on there.

Might be useful to keep in mind Whaler's original recommendations on trailers for this hull: NO roller trailers, bunk trailers only and make sure weight of boat is supported by keel rollers.

Keel rollers are not necessary as long as there is enough support. They are however very useful and supportive.
