Whaler Nation! I just put a new Yamaha F90 on my 1993 Montauk 17. Love it. Couldn't be happier with it. I've never had a new motor before, only used. Should I let the dealer do the 20 hour and the winterization? I''m only at about 10 hours now. Yamaha sells pretty complete 20 hour and 100 hour maintenance kits, I'm not sure why I couldn't just do it myself. I'm no mechanic but I can change oil and gearbox lube. Just looking for some advice from new motor owners. Thanks!
Matty, if you feel comfortable, go for it! Regular maintenance is not rocket science, and you'll save a ton of money. To save more, don't buy the Yamaha kits - just get the filters and other parts. The kits overcharge for everything, especially the oil - much cheaper from your local store.
You will need a couple of specialized tools such as an oil drain pump (most people suck the oil out - it's just easier) and gear lube pump.
I'm not familiar with the manuals for newer Yamahas, but hopefully they still give you a lot of good info on maintenance - in any case, start with a read.
Personally, I do not pay $100+/hr for a "tech" to change the oil and "check" things.
I would pay for a factory certified mechanic to complete items I do not have the tools or knowledge to do.
Call the Service desk and ask for the price of a 20 hour service. Take a slow deep breath to recover then ask for an itemized list of charges for each of the items, then select the ones you want done.

I had the dealer do my 20 hour service just so I could say it was done for my 6yr warranty. All they did was change the oil and run a diagnostic on it and then they left my key on so they had to put a new hour meter on it. I don't go to dealers anymore.
