Hi
I know this has be covered many times before, but here in NZ, I can still buy a NEW Yamaha 90HP 2-Stroke (which is the motor on the boat at present).
Obviously, I will not need new prop. and ancilliaries if I stay with a 2-stroke Yamaha.
My main use is fishing, with some biscuiting, skiing and scuba diving.
Advice please?
Yamaha 90hp 2-stroke - NZ$ 11,000
Yamaha 70HP 4-stroke - NZ$ 13,500
Yamaha 90HP 4-stroke - NZ$ 16,800
Evinrude E-Tec 60HP - NZ$ 9,400
Evinrude E-Tec 90HP - NZ$ 12,000 (if still available)

Evinrude is selling off motors, as they have ceased production: It is with great regret and sadness that we say goodbye to EVINRUDE, a brand we have all come to love and respect.

BRP recently announced that it has stopped production on the entire line of Evinrude Outboards, indefinitely. The company has cited

COVID-19 as the main reason for the decision. Below are our answers to a few of the the most frequently asked questions since the announcement.

I would go for the 90hp 2-stroke.

Proven design, great power curve, light weight and low cost.

Etec is tempting at those prices but the ability to use your controls, tach, wiring harness, prop, etc makes the 90 Yamagucci a no brainer.

I am in a similar situation and have looked at all these motors. I’m going to fix mine instead. With that being said I would vote against the Evinrude for sure unless they cut the price significantly. Who knows what the parts situation will be in a few years on those. I would also be concerned about the warranty and the resale value.
If I have issues after this repair I’m switching to the Suzuki 90hp. I have been quoted $9k and $10k on this motor. This includes rigging and controls. I have similar rates in USD for Mercury. I have had great success with Mercury in the past and love them. Yamaha and Honda are great as well.
