Hello
This is my first visit/post
I have a 1988 13 super sport with 1988 Yamaha 30
The motor struggles to stay running while in neutral and stalls when shifting into forward or reverse most of the time
It seems to run fine while in neutral with the throttle lever lifted a bit, but once brought back down, she struggles again and stalls.
If I'm lucky, and have some open water, I can quickly put her in forward and work her up to speed where she runs well.
The stalling problem happens only while in neutral and immediately after putting into forward or reverse, not at speed.
Obviously super difficult to get her in and out of slip which requires fwrd/rev at slow speeds.

any advice would be appreciated

Carbs are dirty. Do not run it like that or you will be buying a new engine. Is this a 2cyl or 3cyl 30hp?

Thank you for your reply
It is a 3 cylinder

In your opinion, would removing the air filter and spraying the carbs with carb cleaner do the trick or would the carbs need to be rebuilt? Almost seems like a low idle adjustment. If there is such a thing on these motors.

Why would running cause engine failure? It runs fine once it gets going.

Thank you again

I highly doubt spraying anything in the air intake is going to do anything. Some carbs have idle adjustments and some do not. Chances are the carbs need to come off and be cleaned which is an easy DIY if you are semi handy with engines. If you have multiple carbs and one is running lean which is causing the stalling, you will blow that cylinder. If you have just one carb and she runs like usual at top end then it could be just an idle adjustment but again many do not have a knob you can turn.

Thank you again

I am mechanically inclined and do have some mechanical experience. So certainly not afraid to take them off and clean

Can you direct me to a manual or documentation/video?

I'm guessing I would need a carb rebuild kit...(3)?

I don't buy rebuild or gasket kits unless something tears. Take a picture of linkage if necessary. I just pull the bowl off and use torch files(carefully) along with carb cleaner and go through every port and jet hole. Clean thoroughly and reassemble. Once off the engine it is usually 5mins or so per carb to clean. I do not remove or touch the air mixture screws or idle adjustment(if they have it) as they do not get dirty. It is usually the main jet just under the bowl or one of the small idle circuit jets that is the culprit. Torch files are available at any auto parts store. Pick a smaller but close sized file and just give a quick run through and flush with cleaner. Do not re jet the hole as they are files.
