I just found this site today lots of great information. I am looking to get another Whaler I have had a few 13's and my last was a 15 super sport with a 90 Yamaha
now I am looking at a 18 Outrage. Heres the deal I have a 200 Opti Max off of my flats boat its a great motor but its a 20" leg can I use this motor on a 18 or 19 outrage will I need a jackplate or can I fab something my self. Thanks in advanced for the help the boat I have been looking at is a 86 model if that makes a difference. Capt. James Moore

The 200 would put an 18 or 19 over it's maximum power rating. So, that decision is up to you. Though with the 20" leg it will not fit on a classic 18'6" Hull (18 outrage, 19 Outrage II). You would have to put a very long set back bracket on the boat to get it far enough back to run correctly through the water while on plane. I would not let an existing motor dictate the boat I am buying. Change the motor before the boat.

You will be 50HP over the rating, I think the boat can handle the weight at 497 pounds, it is still less than twins. If you want to use the outboard then look to see if you can convert it to a 25 inch shaft. You might decide to sell that outboard and look for a used one, your choice. I would not try to make the 20 inch shaft work.

The hull can handle the HP, but can your local law enforcement? You will have to make that call based on your local knowledge.

You will NOT be happy with a 20" shaft motor on this boat in a single application, however. I don't believe you will be happy even with the added complexity and expense of a large setback bracket.

Either buy a shaft extension for the motor, sell the motor (or trade for one with a 25" shaft), or buy a different boat to put the motor on....

Good luck in whatever you choose to do.

All postings are correct saying you need a 25" shaft motor. You can buy a 5" extension kit from Bay Manufacturing in Milan Ohio. It is very simple to install. Boston Whaler did make a few 19' models that were rated for 200hp. No 18' models have had that kind of HP rating.

Keep your insurance policy in mind when overpowering. If you have an accident will the policy cover you if you are 50hp over the recommended limit? Read the fine print.
