Hi,

I noticed the trans. drain tube on my 15" sport has seen better days. any advice on how to change it, the splash well drain tubes are going as well but, are not that much of a concern as they are above the water line, I still am changing them out.

Thank you,

Matt

Hi Matt,

What you'll need to start with is: Brass Tubing, flaring tool, o-rings, sealant.

I read at CW, some - specifically Tom Clark, recommend annealing the tubing to lessen the likelihood of the end splitting while flaring it. It sounds like a good idea and I generally take Tom's recommendations as gospel. It really is a pain to start all over again because of a split end. In that case you'll want a propane torch or equivalent and a pail of water for cooling the part.

Here is a photo of a flaring tool (flanging tool).

This photo is from the Hamilton Marine Catalog.

This part is found here: http://store.hamiltonmarine.com/brows...4,6791.htm

They are less expensive at shipstore.com:
1" - http://www.shipstore.com/ss/html/MOE/...70000.html
1 1/4" - http://www.shipstore.com/ss/html/MOE/...70400.html

The drain tubes can be found at a number of sources:
McMaster - http://www.mcmaster.com
Shipstore - http://www.shipstore.com/SS/HTML/MOE/...X-MOE.html
TwinCitiesMarine - http://www.twincitiesmarine.commarine.com

Sue Lodel at Twin Cities Marine sells them also. I bought mine from her a few years ago as well as the tubes and o-rings. She sent installation instuctions along too.

Some may get on my case for the following but for the transom you may want to consider something like this, if they don't interfere with engine mounting etc...:

or even:

All of the above parts were found performing a google image search for "Brass Thru Hull" and they link to the suppliers.

Tips for installation:
Cut the tube approx. 1/4"- 5/16" longer than the length of the hole.
Anneal the tube before flaring.
Do not over flare - this will cause splitting of the tube.
Make sure you put the o-rings on BEFORE putting the tube in place and the flaring tool on.
A little sealant the length of the hole or at least at the ends for o-ring bedding.

OR -

Take it to the nearest dealer for replacement of the tubes. Smile

Thanks Mike,

I like to keep the Whaler in top shape, as she was "called to duty" last July, and rescued an injured Jet skier (jumped a wake, and hit a Bouy) with a broken hip. The Coast Guard Zodiac could not get the injured person (on the backboard) past it's freeboard when we tried to lift him in. The Whaler was low enough (in the front) to the water to get the injured person on board our boat, and the C.G. escorted us to a waiting ambulance. The little 15' sport, really saved the day. God I love this boat !
