I have a 1974 Boston Whaler Revenge. It has a 1986, 175 Evinrude ocean Pro that came with. Id like to repower with a Mercury 225 salt water series. It weighs 80lbs more than the Evinrude. Will the boat and transom hold the Mercury? Would appreciate any feed back, Thank you so much, Rod.
Please keep in mind we are a detail driven group so specificity is king. You omit which model of Revenge you are referring to. In 1974 there were two models of Revenge. The Revenge 19 and the Revenge 21.
Presuming the transom on your boat is in good condition, has no cracks in the top, drain tubes are in good condition with proper 0 rings, it will be able to support the added weight. A good test of a transom's condition is to tilt the engine all the way up and lift the skeg with your arm and observe if the transom flexes.
To assess the impact of an increase in engine weight prior to installation, the recommendation is to simulate the added weight by installing the added weight (80lbs) in the splashwell. Weight in the form of water, dry concrete mix, bags of sand will all work. Operate the boat at all different speeds and observe its performance.
Rod...what phil said plus what engine do you have now as Evinrude did not make a 175 Ocean pro in 2006. I believe all Evinrudes in 2006 were E-Tec models. The Ocean Pros I believe were discontinued in the late 90's when the Fict Ram came to market but I could be wrong on that.
Why do you want to go to a Mercury 225 and what year is it? You will need to re-rig the entire boat as the engine rigging is not compatible. The 1974 model 19's were rated for 170hp(twin 85hp) and later rated for 175. The 21's were rated for 200hp. Both hulls require a 20" shaft which I believe is not available with the saltwater series, double check on that. I am not sure but the same may go for the Ocean Pro series. What length shaft do you have? Is it on a jackplate?
Sorry my 1974 boston whaler revenge it is a 19 ft with a Evinrude ocean pro is a 1986 175 hp 25 In on a5 In jack plate the motor on the boat is bad the I have 2003 mercury 225 saltwatre series long shaft 25 in in my shop it only has 300 hr I took of a boat i sold I would like to use it
Ocean Pro came out in 1992 but at least we know what engine you have and what size boat. Sure the 225 will fit, make sure transom is solid for that kind of HP and make sure it is jacked up high. You are on a setback so make sure antiventilation plate is a 2-3" above the keel.
