Just a general question on battery use/charging. After starting the motor with both batteries connected, is the proper battery setup to run with just one battery only? If this is the case I assume it is OK to move the battery switch from Both to 1 OR 2 while under power?

This may sound stupid but you can not switch the battery while running with an outboard, you can fry the electronics. Key word is "may". Newer outboards you may be able to do so but conventional 2 strokes would fry the rectifier. I have slipped and done it a few times but never fried anything. With an inboard or I/O you can flip the switch while running. If you have more modern power I would ask the dealer or manufacturer. Personally I don't think it is a good idea to start an outboard with both batteries unless you need that juice to get it started at sea due to whatever reason.

PS...The main reason is that the old 2 strokes did not have alternators so they could not charge both batteries at once and may do damage as well. Newer outboards have newer designs and that might be a thing of the past as well. I have not owned a dual battery outboard boat since my 1994 Hydra Sports. My 18' Outrage had 2 batteries but I since removed one and never touched the switch.
