Under normal operating conditions with little high RPM running, how many hours should I get before I have to add oil to the reservoir tank? I'm not sure that the gauge at the helm will give me a low oil warning or if there is a sounding alarm. I'm told the oil reservoir holds about 2 gallons. Running the original Mercury 225 EFI motor with 225 hours.

Any mathematical formula will not be accurate.
It is best to check the reservoir every 2 trips to learn its consumption based on your actual use.
I would store a gallon on the boat for reserve.

Thanks Phil. BW should have put a dipstick on the cap to satisfy the automotive gearhead in me. Will keep a gallon and a flashlight on the boat.

Tanks like that need to be see through or have a dipstick in my opinion. You should get a warning but I don't like warning buzzers. Two gallons will last at least 100gals of fuel so I would fill at every tank fill and see what it takes. My 225 had a 2.5gal tank and I used about 70-80:1 ratio per tank, not the 50:1 I quoted you on yours.

I don't usually fill the gas tank (92 gallon tank according to BW) but the mechanic at my local marina suggested a 12-1 gas/oil ratio so for every 48 gallons of gas I should think 1 gallon of oil. I will continue to monitor that.

The standard ratio of 50:1 is measured in Gallons.
50 Gallons of Fuel
1 Gallon of Oil
I am assuming you were talking quarts but you Need to mention that in your statement.
12 Quarts of Fuel to 1 Quart of Oil = 48:1 ratio
Otherwise most people would be confused at your statement.
12 Gallons of Fuel to 1 Gallon of Oil = 12:1 ratio and that would be way too much oil and likely smoke and foul the plugs.
OR,
200 Quarts of Fuel to 4 Quarts of Oil = 50:1 ratio
OR,
100 Quarts of Fuel to 2 Quarts of Oil = 50:1 ratio
OR,
50 Quarts of Fuel to 1 Quart of Oil = 50:1 ratio
We can also break that down to pints if anyone is interested but we need to mention that in the statement.
Gallons, Quarts, Pints, etc.

Hopefully your oil injection does a better job that 48:1 mix. They usually range from 50:1-150:1 depending on amount of throttle.

Yeah, I misread the question a little.
VRO does use less Oil at higher speeds.
Variable Ratio Oil system
Still trying to figure out exactly what his mechanic suggested of "12-1 gas/oil ratio"

You are correct Joe. If you read it again it says 48gals is 1 gal of oil.
