Has anyone here ran a 40 hp 4-stroke Yamaha on a 15' whaler. Just wondering what the performance is like? Or is this motor too small for this boat. Thanks!

Performance is subjective.

Personal load, rigging and prop selection will also have a significant impact on your experience.

I had a 48SPL on a 15' w/o PTnT and she did around mid 30's. Years ago my friend had a 15' with a 35hp and I had a 13' with a 35hp and we ran about the same...30-32ish.

Like Phil said, it really depends on your needs, etc. Personally I would not go under 90hp but that is me. I had a 70 OMC with carb work and it would do over 48mph. I have been on 2 with 115's.

24 Whalers so far....

A 15 foot classic sport 15 will do fine with a 40 horsepower Yamaha outboard as long as you don't expect much as far as performance goes, and you don't take others with you when you take it out. With a single person and gear in the boat, it will still plane in decent time, and it will have a fair cruising speed of probably right around 23 to 25 miles per hour.

The Yamaha 40 horsepower won't be good as far as pulling up skiers, or carrying more than one person with gear at any kind of acceptable speed.

Hope that helps,
Paul
