1986 18' Outrage...looking for 60mph

I just bought a nice Outrage with a sweet 115 Yamaha 4s. I have owned my fair share of Whalers(24) and have dreamed of building a sleeper for years as my fastest one was a 19 Revenge w/175 that ran low 50's. With a properly setup 150 you can fetch 50. What do you think it will take to fetch 60 or close enough? I am thinking 250max but it may be possible with a 200 or close. I want the least weight obviously so if a 200 will do 58, good enough, etc. I am going 4 stroke and a 250 would be pushing the weight even after I move the batteries to the console.

Nick - remember Dave running twin 90 E-TEC's on his Outrage 18 back in 2006. With 180 hp, canvas and an arch he measured 52 mph.
I am thinking you will need 225hp and a jackplate.

I have the same boat and motor. It feels a little stern heavy to me with the F115.
The forward locker is pretty big so I would add as much "soft weight" you can up there.
Sheet lead can be scavenged from drywall if you can find a doctors office being re-habbed.
The walls of the x-ray booth have 1/16" or 1/8" depending on what room it is seperated from.

Picked up my 18 today. Engine is mounted all the way up and has a SS 17 or 18" prop. I hit 5800 and honestly the 115 is not a bad match for the 18'. No GPS but seat of my pants says low 40's. I have 400lbs of engine and 2 batteries in the splashwell. If I move battery under console I am close to the same weight with the 225. I think it rides fine with this setup but I never drove one before. My 13' has a Suzuki 40 that weighs like 250lbs on it, I'm used to stern heavy boats ;)
Spoke with Tom Clark and he concurs that a F225 w/o a jackplate mounted all up with a 22" prop should do 58+ which is my mark. Would love to hear some real numbers as Dave's boat was rigged for winter survival and probably weighed 800lbs more than a stock one. I think Whale Lure had twin 115's but all those old posts are gone I think from CW.

What about the Yamaha inline 4, basically the same size and weight as the 150?
I would really worry about the weight of any thing bigger.

I am not buying new. I am not buying any type of 2 strokes either but thanks for the information. If I was going new it would probably be a Suzuki like all of my last 5 or so repowers. I have an opportunity to swap my F115 for a F225.

You must have access to some seriously flat water. I can push the 19 Outrage II (same hull as Outrage 18) i to the 44 mph range with a 2-stroke 150, but I only attempt that when conditions permit. Not sure I’d want to be travelling above 50 in this hull.
Of all the modern 4-stroke engines available for over-powering this hull, in my opinion the best available (by far) options are from Mercury. They offer a 225 HP 3.4L V6 that weighs only 475 lbs (20”), or a 225 HP 4.6L V8 that comes in at 505 lbs (20”). You could also go all the way up to a 300 HP rating in that V8 with no additional weight penalty.
I sometimes toy with the idea of replacing the 150 2-stroke with the 175 or 200 HP version of Merc’s 475 lbs 3.4L V-6. I feel that would put some nice additional grunt on the transom with minimal weight penalty.

You also said you were buying a 4-stroke AND concerned about weight. If you go with a used Suzuki or Yamaha that is sized to push you at 60 mph weight will be a major problem.
Mercurys can be purchased on the used market.

Right now have close to 550lbs in the stern between the engine and twin batteries so I am not too concerned about 580lbs. I posted this before I drove the boat and it takes on some water in the well but nothing crazy.
What I am mainly interested in is SOMEBODY who has an over powered 18 to chime in with some hard performance #'s so I can see if a 200 will do because many are lighter than the 225/250's. I have a line on an even swap with a 2004 Mercury/Yamaha 225hp. If it would stop freaking raining here I could do some more research on how the 115 performs.

Have you ever thought of putting a floatation bracket on the back? Give you more LOA which I'd like @ 60 mph. Plus, free up more deck space, less ass heavy, quicker, faster, more economical, etc.

I saw that years ago and hence why I thought an 18 would be a better fit. I met a guy at one of my rendezvous that just bought a Montauk with a 200 Yamaha on it and he said it would do over 60 but uncontrollable after 55 or so and never tried for WOT. I think 250 or 300 would be overkill even on a 18. The Montauks narrow beam is another reason I picked the 18.

First of all that doesn't look like a 300 hp to me.
Big, did you see my post above? I think you are going to need to add an aluminum bracket on the back, and the biggest one you can fit. That will get you to 60 mph without making the boat a joke.
Tell me I'm wrong. Because right now you are reminding me of Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear when he could have had any engine he wanted and took the biggest one >>>

Archie--I did not watch the video you posted but years ago there was somebody from Norway or someplace with a Montauk and a 300 HPDI on it which I assume is in your video.
MG56--I am not interested in a bracket, whalerdrive, or even a jackplate. Transom mount only. If it does not work I will sell it and buy something that will be a better fit. This is why I am on the fence between a F225(which many claim is only 207hp), a lighter 200hp or a F250. We believe 200 should get me high 50's which is fine but there are a ton of F225's and 250's for sale. My concern is the exhaust chamber on the older models.
